The difference in treatment though is telling - Global can often be seen as more cold and clinical but there was a lot of warmth with Roman’s announcement he was leaving and allowing listeners to enjoy the last few weeks.

I get the situation with Jordan is a little different but surely you could give him a last show or if Radio 1 are really that frightened of the C word being mentioned you can even pre-record a segment (so you know he won’t mention Capital by name or anything) where he can say a proper goodbye on air.

Though given Adele Roberts got the same treatment as Jordan despite not even moving to a competitor and having gone through so much personally in the last few years the Radio 1 treatment for departing DJs these days seems to be of the ‘there ain’t no monorail and there never was’ variety.

I wonder what happened with Adele - we know she was looking after her sick mum but feels odd she just disappeared given how much love there was for her.

I know it's a different kettle of fishh because Roman isn't moving to a rival station, but the contrast between Roman announcing he is leaving and the outpouring of love, and the BBC cancelling Jordan I find really jarring.

I really don't see why they couldn't even have given Jordan one last week with the strict understanding he doesn't mention where he is going and Capital don't overly promote his move beyond an announcement.

Disagree. I think Greg is top of his game, the listening figures reflect how well he's still doing. There's nobody more obvious who can bring in those numbers.

Radio 1 will be keen to keep hold of him for stability right now.

I'd agree with that if you had a strong game to offer instead of Greg but right now stability is key - losing him would be incredibly dangerous.

I do think this is worrying times for radio 1. As an old head I recall Moyles leaving but you felt there was a solid guaranteed future for the station. Scott still there, big experienced names to sort stuff out when it got tough. It was the same when Mark and Lard went, Simon Mayo, Chris Evans etc years and years back. But now it feels like with Jordan North going it's going to sound like a load of teenagers giggling amongst themselves. And I point to mid mornings on that imo. Radio 1 need a big young star who can present, and who's already popular to come in and create a fuss. And I mean someone who can be relevant for the next gen, not radio 1s current target audience. Aim for 2030.

As one of the others on here with slightly more Radio 1 hours behind us - I would agree completely here.

I think what Jordan was, was the bridge between older and new.  I think Greg, RMC and Matt leaving would have been smoother with Jordan there.   They really need Greg to stay for at least 2 years now.

Probably not. If it were Katie alongside Vick I probably would've remained as the Katie/Jordan/Vick thrupple and their banter was the appeal of the show and I sort of largely put up with the music.

Whereas couldn't stand Jamie Laing as Mollie's maternity cover so much like some other of the daytime shows I might keep a distance from it.

Agreed - I would have stuck with the show if it was Katie that had been taking over.

    Long time lurker, so hello.

Do you think after Jordan's departure that Radio 1 could lose more of its DJs this year?

Global have big pockets, and it looks like there is an ambition in radio to fund new stations.

There looks to be a lot of unhappiness this week at the station, and commercial's offering now looks more lucrative.

So could be the first of many?

I think the biggest issue is that Greg, Matt and RMC are probably close to the end of their time at the station and it's hard to believe Vick and Jamie are there for the longhaul.  Huge change ahead over the next few years in a similar way to what we have seen on Radio 2.

I can’t believe I’m about to say this but Dean actually sounds far better than he ever has when he subbed in recently for Greg. He wasn’t annoying and actually seemed a polish DJ. He might be the new host as Aled thinks the demographic like him but he is universally disliked across all platforms. If he tones down the attention seeking and gets a good producer then he might be worth listening to.

I agree that Dean has probably never sounded better than his Breakfast stand-ins but there is nothing about him that makes me think he is the most worthy DJ in the country to get one of the top gigs...  He might not have been annoying on these stand-ins but there was nothing special about them either.

Even at this early stage in their careers Sam and Danni would be much better or possibly even Jack Saunders if he wanted to go away from specialist.  My preference would be Katie solo at this stage.

    Or somebody from outside.

It won't be Matt and Mollie or RMC at this stage in their careers and realistically it seems unlikely Vick Hope will be there in the long-term.

Up to Friday my prediction would have been Jordan (alone or partnered) to take over Breakfast in the next year, do only a few years - say 4 max - and Sam and Danni next.

But Radio 1 has played wildcards before - Grimmy wasn't the obvious replacement for Moyles.

Alex hasn’t been on the radio since he did Fridays in November 2021, but he was very good and surprised he hasn’t been used since.

He does 1100 to 1500 Weekdays on Kiss Fresh and 1100 to 1400 on  Kiss at Weekends so his availability isn't huge (like with Emil).  But yes he was very good - I recall him doing one or two bits with Greg that were great.

Interesting… according to this clip, Radio 2 asked Steve Wright if he’d consider bringing back his afternoon show a few days before he passed away https://twitter.com/StalledMovie/status/1758977108288667960

I'm not sure this stuff is to be trusted and yes if true maybe their idea was to bring Steve Wright in the Afternoon to the new station.

What's the likelihood that Roman will announce his departure on Monday with Jordan appearing in the studio to be unveiled live on air?

I guess that depends what restrictions the BBC have on Jordan.  From Capital's side this is a very smooth transition as Roman is going on his own terms.

Depends on the presenter they hiring and what show they want for them. Ken Bruce was given freedom beyond breakfast to be quite liberal in what he can do and make that the star show for GHR. Think it might be the same for some of Virgin Radio’s stuff. I do think that Radio 1 and the BBC shouldn’t be cold when people leave their organisation.

At a human level I agree - Jordan is probably one of the biggest personalities Radio 1 has seen in many years - not through his name but just his style.  Look at how much he got referred to on other shows.  His "driving thing" this week ended up featuring on virtually all daytime shows in the end.

I suspect so, given that he’s going to a direct rival.

I don’t understand the problem with announcing that Jordan was leaving second. Apart from Scott, when they didn’t have a replacement lined up, they’ve always structured their press releases to have the announcement of the new presenter first, as seen by Adele, Grimmy and Annie. Yes, the rest of the reception has been extremely cold, but I don’t blame them given that he’s going to a direct rival at the peak of his career.

Exactly - I love Jordan lots - easily my favourite radio presenter of recent years but I 100% get the BBC's position which has been dramatically affected by what Greatest Hits Radio did with Ken Bruce.

They are bound to be mighty p'd off that one of their biggest talents is leaving them.  I think Aled's words were respectful but low-key.

You start to wonder if this is why Jordan didn't cover Breakfast at the start of the year as all this was starting.  This won't have started this week but been an ongoing dialogue.

I just hope the move to Capital works for Jordan.  I get the impression the big commercial stations have a more liberal attitude to how their Breakfast presenter behaves versus the rest of the schedule.

I agree, it’s no secret that Jordan wanted Breakfast, so if he wasn’t going to get it at R1, an offer to go to Capital Breakfast would be very tempting

He’s also going to be conscious of his age - if he doesn’t do this now it’s probably not going to happen.

its just sad that the Ken Bruce / Greatest Hits thing took the p and the BBC rightly didn’t want a repeat.

I feel some of the DJs seemed a bit shell shocked by the announcement too. I dare say they knew he was going, but perhaps expected a farewell celebration on air first.

I suspect it was an open secret but then BBC management decided to axe him when it was all confirmed.

After the Ken Bruce debacle I don’t blame them but very hard for the listeners.

Funny how Chris Stark is giving subtle hints.

Jordan and Greg have always seemed to get along I don’t think there’s anything to read into there - if anything Greg is probably gutted Jordan won’t be his successor.

They are actually friends as far as we know.

Mind you the pics of Jordan with Sian Welby this week start to take on a new context.

  16. Contracts often have break points so even though it seems his contract runs until September he may be able to go with 3 months notice or something.

And he will still be paid as it is the BBC's decision not to have him on air.

Sad he didn't get a farewell show tho.

Thank you! I mean you just have to look at the demographic of who is commenting/engaging with Radio 1 mostly on the “youth” social media platforms instagram and TikTok - is it their supposed “target” audience? Doesn’t look like it to me. You can push stuff in front of kids but it doesn’t mean they’re going to engage.

I do also think it’s worth noting that people my age are maturing at a much slower rate now. For example, clubbing into a much older age and a lot more in touch with youth culture than people my age now were maybe 10 years ago. Shifts in culture like this also need to be considered I believe.

I actually think this is an issue generally with people as much as under 60.  Let's not forget the end of the 80s/90s was the birth of secret raves.  These people are now 50 plus at least...

This is quite a loss for Radio 1. You'd of thought he would have been the man to step into Greg's shoes when he goes. When Greg does eventually go, I'm actually struggling to think of anyone left at Radio 1 on daytimes who I could class as top tier really.

As I said above - we have Katie now and Sam & Danni with a little more experience.

Dean wasn't awful this morning but he is a long way from full-time and actually his Breakfast Stand-ins have been about his best work at Radio 1.  His solo show and Dean and Vicky are at best not "must listen".
