  1. I've said a few times on this forum about the playlist being to 1xtra-like in the past couple of years. You can really hear the difference if you listen back to some older shows - much more indie and pop being played in the past and more rap currently. However I think it comes in waves, there have been periods in the past 12 months when the playlist is dominated by 1xtra type stuff and and at other times there's been less rap and more indie. Even around 2011/2012 the dominant genre would change quite a bit from month to month (I remember it being very dance heavy at one point).

  2. - mentions how he's not used to getting up so early / strange being on the radio at a different time

    - plays why hello there Jill clip

    - live music

    - George Ezra is a guest

    - says afternoon instead of morning

    - goes off playlist quite a bit

    - some sort of mention about faders/studios/mics or something to keep the geeks happy

    - some old Greg James show references that only his long time listeners/podcastards will get

  3. Sadly I think that the absence of Chris Smith With The News on What's My Age Again and Shouldn't Be News is R1 slowly phasing out Chris's non-newsbeat on air appearances. Hopefully though we'll get more highlights of past shows this week which will feature Greg and Chris together.

In terms of features moving to the breakfast show: What's My Age Again is my favourite so hopefully they'll keep that; Impossible Karaoke is relatively new so might appear again; Shouldn't Be News is good but might have run it's course now. I got tired of the Ten Minute Takeover when we were "treated" to half an hour of Greatest Hits everyday since TMT basically became a 10 minute extension of that. However now that Greatest Hits is being phased out I'd quite like it to stay. There'll probably be a load of new features for breakfast too.

  4. Weekend Breakfast with Dev and Alice has potential to be a really good show but there's just too much music. 60 songs so 15 an hour doesn't leave them much time to talk - it's a waste of them both being there if they don't have time to talk. Get rid of a few songs each hour so the links and features can be extended and you'd end up with a decent, podcastable, breakfast show.

  5. Ah, the old Wednesday night Matt Edmondson Show. I miss it too, it was the first radio show that I made sure that I didn't miss each week. Still one of the best things I've ever heard.

Dev has been sounding good covering the 8th recently – still entertaining without the I-want-the-whole-universe-to-hear-me shouting. He makes the show much more listenable.

  6. After hearing the trails over the last week (the Queen Alice Levine one is particularly good), I caught the end of Dev and Alice’s show then bits of the other shows throughout the day on Friday.

First time I’ve heard Dev and Alice together and thought they worked well together however I didn’t hear enough of it to catch any features or compare it to Grimmy’s show.

Maya was alright I guess, she wasn’t annoying this time and I didn’t notice any technical problems. She had a few anecdotes to tell and didn’t have any one to interrupt. No worse and no better than a Clara show to be honest. Glad that greatest hits didn’t run for the full 3 hours – hopefully this is the start of it being phased out either completely or at least to an acceptable level. Of course, this show should really have been Jordan’s.

Matt and Mollie were as good as ever and Mollie sounds more comfortable on air now. In reply to other’s comments about the jokes in the songs coming up bit – I like this part of the show, it is very Matt Edmondson however it works better with his delivery than it does with Mollie’s.

Scott sounded great on the chart – best chart show I’ve heard for a while.

All in all good to have something different at breakfast (and to have Alice on an extra day), 10-1 was nether better or worse, Matt was as good as always and it was good to hear Scott doing the chart.

I do wonder, however, how relevant is Mollie King these days? Does she have a big following and which age group are they targeting with her?

Haven't heard Greg's show for a while until today - unless today was just a one off, he now plays FIVE songs before his opening link. Two in a row, a ramp, a crunch and roll, a trail, a song and THEN the first proper link at about 16:18. That's ridiculous.

There's also only 2 callers on What's My Age Again now with a boring guess the age of a celeb in the event of a tie :(

  8. I hadn't noticed how similar Katie and Adele sound until you mentioned it, maybe because I'm also a northerner. I agree she's a good presenter but I thinks she suits the format of Life Hacks/The Surgery more than daytime music-led shows. That said, it would be good to hear her do more cover when Jordan's not available.

Ali Plumb off of Movies is in for Phil Taggart tonight.

Any thoughts on the show after a few months?

I think it’s very different to anything else on the radio at the moment which is good. I also love the unprecedentedly about the whole thing. I do feel it is a bit too 1xtra though. But I do enjoy listening to it.

I enjoy it occasionally but the music isn't quite my thing. The late night games and shenanigans have been missing from R1 since The Matt Edmonsdon Show finished it's Wednesday night run. I wonder if Matt would work well as a cover host - he suits a format of silly games and comedy.
