  1. Only takes a few minutes of research on the internet or from leaflets you're sent to work out who to vote or not vote for. We got a BNP leaflet. Racist scum. Was going to write that on the leaflet but couldn't find anything to write with except a pink highlighter and that wouldn't show up.
  2. So what sucks is that they didn't actually tell us the mark, just the degree class of the dissertation. So it could be either 52, 55 or 58. As it is worth something like 22% of the whole degree, it's pretty important to know which of those it is. After wandering aimlessly for a couple of hours (I went to Sainsburys, weirdly enough) I saw a few people in the library who had also got Firsts, bastards. Anyway one of them told me that one of my housemates and another of my friends had also got 2:2s and were not happy about it. After trying to work but failing, I went to my friend's house and we commiserated together. We did the maths and I worked out that I am pretty sure to get a 2:1 overall as I got 65 average for last year, which is worth 1/3rd of the overall degree, and my average marks this year have been good. I've got 5 exams to come, which between them are worth the same amount as my dissertation. So I think I'm going to be alright. I'm worried about my housemate though and my other friend as they are likely to be more marginal. I don't understand why anything less than a 2:1 is seen as a failure, it doesn't mean they put any less effort in. And I'm angry that my dissertation tutor was so completely useless. He doesn't care at all about the students, I've seen so much evidence of that. Some other people got so much help and guidance. I've just come home after avoiding it all day because my housemates (the two boys) are annoying me. Back to work tomorrow, got to ace these exams. It's such a bad time to tell us this and not tell us if it's a high, middle or low 2:2.
  3. I'm a failure. Got the provisional result back for my dissertation. No actual mark, just the degree class it got, so within 10% of the mark. I got a 2.2. I don't know if it's always been this way but certainly these days anything less than a 2.1 is considered a failure. My coursework marks are much higher but the lecturers have said that it's hard to go up a degree class from the diss mark. Now the boy keeps calling me but I don't want to talk to him because he got a 1st.
  4. Happy birthday Danni. Enjoy the legal drinking once the exam's over!

    Swine Flu

The Swine Flu leaflet finally arrived through the door (along with one urging us to vote UKIP).
  6. Holiday to Cyprus = booked is pretty soon after Glastonbury, should help to ease the pain of leaving Uni.
  7. Election date is Thursday 4th June. Coincidentally the same day as my last exam. The polling station isn't far away though so I should make it to vote there between panicking and celebrating.
  8. Only according to Private Eye... Comrade Brown is a bit of a change from the Vicar Blair. I've voted in both elections I've been able to since I've been old enough. I think it's a lot of effort though to go to a polling station just to abstain.

    Swine Flu

They started distributing them on Tuesday I think. Didn't get it through the door though. Got it from some women in the Market Square in Nottingham who were giving out tissues for Kleenex and the swine flu leaflets. Was doing quite well as Muller were giving out free yoghurts too.
  10. Should be a publication free of spelling and grammar errors! What rocks is that I am in the process of booking a holiday with friends, we've found a great deal for a week in Cyprus, just have to finalise numbers and pay up. Something to look forward to during the shite revision.

    Swine Flu

Not yet, I'm keeping it to show it to my housemate so he can have a good laugh too. It's quite a long leaflet but doesn't really have much information in it. Much the way I write coursework when it's got to be a set number of pages but I don't know what to say. Was tempted to order some audio tape copies. I'd recommend buying some shares in Kleenex, maybe in pain killer/cold 'cure' manufacturers also as I reckon people will be stocking up.

    Swine Flu

I got my Swine Flu leaflet today. With a free pocket sized pack of Kleenex. I guess the people who are staying home to avoid being in crowded public places won't be benefitting from the ever so helpful information. It says I should keep it in a safe place. Doesn't tell me anything I didn't know though. "Set up a network of 'flu friends' Flu friends are neighbours, friends and relatives who can help you if you get ill. For example, they could collect medicines, food and other supplies for you, so that you don't have to leave home if you are ill." I think it's just trying to say something practical to the paranoid who need reassuring, even though they've got nothing to say. It's just the Government trying to look like they're dealing with it.
  13. As I understand it (what my housemate said - he researched this while avoiding revision) you vote for a party and it works as a sort of proportional representation. The parties have a list of candidates and if the party gets enough votes one of their candidates gets on etc. I will probably be voting either Lib Dem or Green Party. The top person on the Lib Dem list here used to be a Conservative so not entirely convinced by that. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/7819889.stm might help explain it a bit more. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/8040446.stm tells you who your candidates are.

I recommend everything by Douglas Coupland. I love all his books. I'm currently reading Life After God by Douglas Coupland, which is written in a non-conventional way, almost like a series of short stories of varying lengths. Generation X is another great book. Incidentally, JPod is like an updated version of his 1994 book Microserfs "for the Google age". I love everything he's written, I love books that make me think about life differently.
  15. Let's face it: Emma is a very popular name Not sure a poll would be a great idea because some people would be missed out, it always happens, and they wouldn't be happy.
  16. Black Stone Cherry are really good actually, I saw them in December with Stone Gods (the members of The Darkness minus Justin Hawkins playing heavier stuff) and it was a really good gig. Black Stone Cherry are definitely very passionate and do a good live show and Stone Gods put a lot of effort in to get the crowd involved even though they were only a support band. So go see them. Otherwise, Download appeals to me even less this year than it has in previous years.
  17. Sounds awesome Emma. I always seem to forget the previous song as soon as the next song starts, even when I haven't been drinking. What rocks in my life is that I have been becoming closer friends with someone in my friendship group. She's quite slow to open up but we're getting on really well now. She was round on sunday night playing Mario Kart and chatting, then again last night, then tonight loads of people were around then they left but she stayed on and we were just chatting about life and boy problems and stuff. It's nice because it's different to talking to male friends, she's more understanding in particular of my Strongbow Boy problems as she knows him well. He was round here earlier but I opted not to go into town with him and stayed here instead and I'm glad I did.
  18. Revision. Really don't know where to start with it. Arghhh. I can't seem to stop sleeping. I sleep for 10 hours, get up, and I'm really tired again a few hours later. And I'm not moving on fast enough. I know there's nothing I can do about that but it's annoying me anyway. I've got to let go.

Does anyone here read anything other than celebrity autobiographies? I was reading a great book yesterday called Modern Geographical Thought. Not out of choice, and it's not a fun read either.
  20. Cool, that's pretty near here and a load of my friends are going, but there's nothing I want to see there. I've read that the Get Up Kids may be touring the UK this summer, will be following them around if they are. I've got my ticket for the uni summer party, only £25, while 'entertainment' only tickets for the graduation ball are £40, and they haven't even announced what the 'entertainment' is - it'll probably be lame.
  21. Uni summer party "the student glastonbury", as they like to call it. Young Knives, The Rakes (third time this year for me), The Futureheads and a headliner to be announced. Plus Kano, Chase and Status, Pendulum DJ set, Petebox (a local beatboxer who is really good, seen him twice before at uni events), Late Of The Pier DJ set and loads of other stuff. I'm excited about the Young Knives cos I've wanted to see them for a while and The Futureheads were good when I saw them last year and it'll be good to see The Rakes again. Just gotta go buy my ticket.
  22. I got it right first time, but because I'd seen something like this before and knew it has some relation to the word 'of'.

    Snow Patrol

They didn't like Leona Lewis covering Run. Gary Lightbody played it and said "I'm going to play this because it is actually our song". I'm currently listening to the first 2 Snow Patrol albums that didn't make it big and I really like them. I like their newer 3 albums too so I hope they don't decide to retire.
  24. - Doves on Tuesday - Maximo Park later this month - Jamie T next month - Glastonbury next month - Reading in August There'll probably be more

    Swine Flu

Wow the UK population has grown since I last checked! It must be those extra 5 million people who brought the flu with them. My uni is recommending that I don't go to Mexico.
