  1. :yeahthat: Problem is, there's a very big chance he could be shadow chancellor. Personally the only person I'd like to see in that role is Yvette Cooper, and as the wife of Ed Balls, that would be an amazing egg-in-face moment for him. He's performing very well as shadow education secretary admittedly, I'd like him to stay there and continue to give the awful Michael Gove a hard time. Otherwise something like shadow foreign secretary would appease him (after the humilation of not being shadow chancellor) while keeping him at a safe distance. Thing about Ed Balls is, and I'm sure Ed Miliband would agree, is that he is a man prepared to do anything to get to the top. So him being shadow chancellor would give him a dangerously large and powerful empire at the treasury (should Labour return to government) and we'd only see a more bloody re-enactment of the whole Blair/Brown saga. In my opinion anyway
  2. 1Xtra had something like this everyweek. Part of the TXU show Monday-Fridays from 2pm-4, it was a comfortable mix of serious and light news with music and interactivity. Each Wednesday they'd do a full length documentary on some sort of subject. Was really good, dunno why it was axed. Something like that on R1 would be great. Dunno how it would work on daytimes though, unless it was part of Switch on Sunday evenings or the Mon-Thurs 9-10pm slot. But that's hardly daytime.
  3. I wouldn't have minded either way if any of David Miliband, Ed Miliband or Andy Burnham had won. Burnham was my first choice after months of consideration, with E Miliband as my second choice, D Miliband my third. Simply because I found Andy Burnham to have his head screwed on and to be an honest and trustworthy and a moreorless 'normal' guy. Ed Miliband seemed to understand the mistakes Labour have made in the past and was willing to accept them and had a mission to take Labour beyond that to a brighter future and back in power. D Miliband seemed the best communicator and most effective leader of the opposition and prime minister of the future, but seemed so stuck up and arrogant. Not to mention the fact that he seems reluctant to accept (or just a complete failure to even comprehend) where Labour have gone wrong in the recent past. And until just a few weeks ago I considered myself a fan of David Miliband, and a supporter of his campaign to be leader of the party. Other things I considered were the power of the unions (a set of organisations we need on our side for various reasons) and their agenda against D Miliband, and the fact that a move to the far/moderate left under E Miliband could see us winning the support of the working class traditional Labour supporters but losing the support of the middle classes, which would result in us being in opposition for many more years to come. Oh, and the reports that Ed Balls would become shadow chancellor in a D Miliband-led shadow cabinet was enough to put me off him. Ed Balls and Diane Abbott I didnt seriously consider. But anyway, it was moreorless obvious that Ed Miliband was going to win from the beginning with the AV/electoral college system used by the party, so no big surprises there. I'm also very happy Ken Livingstone has won the race to be Labour's London mayoral candidate. Well, that was my two pence worth..
  4. I don't like Total Wipeout. It's just a poor man's Takeshi's Castle.
  5. What Global should do if they wanna take on R1 is network weekday breakfast, drive and maybe 10-1 (and maybe some higher profile weekend daytime slots) across the all the new Capital stations so that they can provide a nationwide alternative to Moyles, Fearne and Mills while providing local programming throughout the rest of the day. If done properly it could dent R1's listening figures (not something I wish to see personally) and minimise job losses at the same time.
  6. Something along the lines of.. "Oh. Well I hope all dem ones that text in wasted der money den init!"

    Early Breakfast

I agree. Forget about importing CBBC presenters, they need to spend more time and energy searching for the next generation of DJs and presenters. Student Radio DJs, club DJs, even those on commercial radio and already on BBC radio. Not to mention those already working behind the scenes who have shown potential. People with personality and character with an interest in music, who are able to do more than just read a script out and texts between the 12 tracks they play in an hour, and create 3 hours worth of entertaining and engaging radio. A potential breakfast show host, the next generation of specialist music DJs. Jez Welham from Kiss would be worth trying out, I'd also love to hear Mistajam, Fabio & Grooverider, Nick Bright, and Twin B from 1Xtra, and Bobby Friction, Adil Ray and Shaun Keaveny from 6Music and Asian Network try covering a few daytime radio shows on 1Xtra and Radio 1. Trying out specialist DJs out in daytime roles has worked for Westwood, Annie Mac, Ronnie Herel, Trevor Nelson and Nihal. Oh, and nurture George Lamb to take over 4-7 or breakfast over the next few years.

I guess you're not a fan of his then. Like him or not, to say he's not improved is unfair. He may not be amongst Radio 1s greatest presenters of past or present, he may never be, but that certainly doesn't detract from the fact that he's a lot better than he was when he first started on Radio 1. Whether that's still good enough or not is a debate for another day, but he certainly has grown.
  9. Speech Debelle's reaction to her low score (33%?) was hilarious!
  10. Oh. I thought that was last week Sunday and that Sara returns this coming Sunday
  11. I'm not too bad thanks. Got my usual Sunday night headache though :\

Have you been away for the summer then?

  12. I think he started off as a producer on Gilles Peterson's show, and I think he's covered his show once or twice. Good move there. The new 1Xtra Sunday night schedule doesn't sound as good though. 'My Top Ten' just sounds like playlisted artists playing the same playlisted songs that are played on 1Xtra daytime shows. And I've always thought of 'best of..' shows as being lazy schedule fillers. Bad enough on bank holidays, let alone every week.
  13. I'd quite like to hear Edith in Jo's weekend slot. But Jo going to R2 is more an inevitablility than it is a rumour. A bit like Fabregas leaving for Barcelona. It's obvious it's going to happen, it's more or less a natural move. It might not happen now, but it will more likely than not happen soon. So the speculation continues 'til it happens. Then of course the rumours are proven to be true.
  14. Brilliant! Whenever Chris is away and the rest of the team are in, I'd rather hear Sara covering than Vernon to be honest.
  15. Does anyone think Greg would have been offered the chance to cover for Friday's show with the team if he wasn't away?
  16. Sara's changed a lot since her stint on breakfast, so it'll be interesting to see how she handles it this time round. Looking forward to listening.
  17. I was hoping Leeds but that's probably not gonna happen seeing as there's already the festival there in the summer. Maybe Halifax with Howard headlining? 8)
  18. After looking at the schedule I didn't bother listening at all, apart from the student radio award winners on the iPlayer.
