    Alts to R1

Because Radio 2's demographic can be too broad at times. Not everyone between 30 and 40 is obsessed with 80's music, like me for instance. My era is late 90's and early 00's. So I end up hopping between Radio 1 & 2. Jump from 2 to 1 when they start playing ABBA, vice versa when grime comes onto Radio 1.
  2. I don't think it's a bad idea for Radio 1 to give a nod to older tracks spanning anything from about 1990 upwards. I know Radio 2 have been generally pushing the boat out to meet that criteria, but there's still certain tracks that they are scared to go near. Namely heavier rock/dance/hip hop. Besides, it can be an education in music to the yoof.
  3. That voiceover girl they used for their idents was the same one we used to use at WCR in Wolverhampton around the very same time. Interesting playlist as well, forgot all about Sugar Ray - Every Morning!
  4. Hi all. Someone has uploaded lots of their old tapes of Chris Moyles' afternoon shows to YouTube, included in that is Chris' September 11th show and the days following. Some of this I heard live at the time, but haven't heard again for almost 19 years. No Mark & Lard on this as they broke the news it's a missing piece, but the events continued into Chris' show, and the days after it shows how Radio 1 dealt with the events. Maybe something younger listeners wouldn't remember, but it's radio history all the same so worth a listen for sure. The entire section of the day and following days runs until 3hrs 47 into the video.
  5. Whoooooooo??!! Is it Ozzy Osbourne Mark? Sounds just like her!!

Some of you may be interested in these recent uploads of Scott on early breakfast in 2001. Radio 1 at it's peak about this point for me.

I like the idea of Kisstory but their playlist is a bit too narrow at times. There's a lot more classic dance/house/garage out there that people will remember apart from 'Robin S Show Me Love'. Absolute's Danielle Perry is pretty good post 7pm, but those 7 min advert marathons usually push me away to Jo Whiley on Radio 2 who's back on at 7pm now.
  8. I have a DAB tuner in my car so I can access Kisstory/Kiss/Absolute (since they binned it off 105.2)/Radio X. But coverage is really crap which is amazing considering I live 10 mile away from England's second biggest city, Birmingham. So usually go back to FM/MW for absolute or 5 Live when it breaks up. I actually have an FM tuner on my phone, but it uses the headphones as an antenna which is as good as a chocolate teapot. So with my 3 unlimited interwebs, tunein app. So it's a mix of all for me.
  9. This is really interesting. I find Radio 1 is doing what it should exactly be doing. But the playlist for the most part not for me now I'm nearly 31. I'm just not into Dave, Drake or Stormzy frankly. So Radio 2 is pulling me in with shows like Ana Matronic's Dance Devotion (sometimes covered by one of my old faves Dave Pearce), and Jo Whiley is sounding great back on evenings now. But they throw me off sometimes by getting scared of upsetting the over 50's, and diving back into the 70s and 80s all the time. Before my time and I have no interest in those decades really. It'll never happen, but in a perfect world Radio 3 and 4 should be merged. With a lot of "discussion" from R4 being moved to 5 Live. Radio 1 stay as it is. Radio 2 focus on us 30-50's with a 90's - now feel, with a touch of 80's but not OTT. With Sara Cox, Zoe Ball, Dave Pearce, Jo Whiley, Scott Mills, maybe Mark Radcliffe if he'd be up to it. And Radio 3 be a direct rival to Smooth, the 80's/70's/60's golden oldies, Motown etc with the likes of Ken Bruce, Steve Wright, Tony Blackburn fronting the pack. It would do well as their is a market for that obviously. But Radio 2 needs to be the middle man and full on cater for us in no man's land.
  10. Mark and Lard the absolute standout one for me. I grew up listening to them on afternoons, and just found them to be the perfect duo. Wasn't forced into liking something they didn't want to like by the heiarchy and was blunt about it on the air, just take for example their opinion of Pied Piper's "Do You Really Like It". It was their spoof phone ins that were brilliant too, loads on YouTube like Missing Words, It's a Mystery, Downcount etc. Lards classic cuts worth a listen too, my sides hurt for days when I heard what they did to Blue Suede Shoes by Elvis. I was truly gutted when they left, as I was about to finish school and was looking forward to being able to hear them more. There were some BRMB shows locally I miss too like the dancemasters one with James, but I did record a lot of that. I was going through a tough time late 2005 early 2006 and listened to the radio a lot to ease that up. Tim Shaw's Asylum on Kerrang radio was crude but good. And of course Scott's Radio 1 drivetime show about then got me through.

I recorded a load of Scott mills for this site from 2005-2007. I plan to try and get them up onto my mixcloud but it's gonna take a hell of a long time. I have already got some local radio such as BRMB up on there, and my Mark & Lard collection too. I have so much Scott Mills to get on there though it's outrageous. Keep your eyes on it all though mixcloud.com/midlandanorak
  12. His times with Chappers and Laura, although I do still listen from time to time nowdays if I'm in the car. Laura's diary was fantastic. But as a one off's those prank calls were brilliant. I remember Radio 1 were going really annoyingly OTT with Mika circa early 2007, I frankly can't stand his music. Scott did a call to an estate agent pretending to be him doing a "rendition" of Grace Kelly which is in the archives on here and worth a listen. https://archive.org/download/ScottMills-EstateAgentRevengeCallmikaStyle122007/1-2-2007-estate_agent_revenge_call_mika.mp3 There's also "Brokeback Westwood", which left my sides hurting whilst everyone was looking at me like I'd gone mad whilst listening on the bus back home from Wolverhampton. https://unofficialmills.co.uk/download/brokeback-westwood-3rd-may-2006/
  13. Listening back to some of my old recordings of Scott from the mid 2000's has made me realise he's done 21 years on Radio 1, what other daytime jock can say they have done that? Incredible really and well earned. Radio 2 seem to be adapting well to welcome his listeners if he makes the permanent switch, I heard Jo Whiley playing Wu Tang Clan's Gravel Pit earlier so why not. Then saying that, that track is now 18 years old!
  14. I seem to remember Radio 1 didn't playlist 'Hips Don't Lie' by Shakira in 2006. Thats gone on to be a song you'd still hear today. Ithought that was a strange one as they played MVP Rock Your Body, and Black Eyed Peas Hey Mama in the previous couple of years. Which were very similar to Shakira's track.
  15. Probably around 1998 for me. We used to go to North Wales a lot during the summer in the late 90's with my parents as a kid. Radio coverage out there 20 years ago wasn't exactly the best so you relied on the nationals as you could get them more or less everywhere. Mark & Lard became a staple listen for me when I could tune in. They are still the best daytime Radio 1 DJ's who ever was for me. I usually followed on to Chris Moyles when he was on air after them at 4pm (later 3pm in 2001). When Mark & Lard went in 2004 I went off Radio 1 for a good year. Aside from specialists like Judge Jules, Dave Pearce... Then I started to listen again at the start of 2005 and found Scott Mills on drive (Sara Cox had been moved off). Along with Chappers and Laura that was a staple listen. I sort of stopped listening to R1 about 2010 as I felt I was getting too old for it really. But I still listen in from time to time nowdays.
  16. It takes it's toll getting up at that time, but Greg should of had the show to begin with back in 2012 - if Scott didn't want it. Chris Moyles was always going to take some replacing, even if his breakfast show never reached the highs of his afternoon show. But Grimmy wasn't the answer, saying that he's had a good run. I think Greg will do well.
  17. I am suprised he got this far to be honest.
  18. Someone will be replacing Radcliffe and McConie on 6Music soon. As they've been there for a bit and there's a good chance they'll be retiring within the next few years. I see Huw Stephens heading to that slot from Radio 1 as he's been there since 99. I don't see Radio 2 taking on Scott full time. It wouldn't fit his style doing what he does and then playing 60's songs.
  19. It's something that will carry on I think, Radio 1 is about new music. But it's nice to educate a touch of older music now and again, to younger listeners. No harm in once a week really.
  20. Ah hearing Mark & Lard on about all this, such memories.
  21. That's wonderful! Explains the story behind Mark and Lard's beards and cowboy hats on the radio 1 DJ photoshoots! Dave Pearce's bit is very cool too. He was left in a right hot spot covering for Evans. And who'd of ever thought Dance Anthems would ever work on a Sunday Night? It's where it should be now, with Dave, but on Radio 2.
  22. Thing is as far as Scott goes, he's still a current Radio 1 DJ, and they have all the time in the world to premier his stuff. Besides a lot of Scotts good stuff is post 2004, the digital age. So anything that matters is probably on this site.
  23. Nice to see some Dave Pearce on there, an old Dance Anthems show would be fantastic. Shame there's no Judge Jules, he was one of Radio 1's staple dance DJ's for many years. Lard has always stepped out of the limelight when it comes to the old show. But just for this once I would love him to just let it be. He should be proud of what they did on Radio 1, and how many people they made happy and laugh until their sides hurt. Mark seems to fully embrace it as given in this interview with Colin Murray for Radio 1's 40th 10 years back. If anyone from Radio 1 is actually watching this thread, I'm happy to send over some full afternoon shows to contribute. Although I'm sure you have your own stash
