Live backstage at Eurovision
Scott broadcast from backstage at Malmö Arena after the first Eurovision semi-final.
Richie Anderson joined him after making his Radio 2 commentary debut and described the experience as feeling like the winner of a competition prize.
The pair compared the intense concentration of neighbouring commentary teams with the much louder British booth.
Scott also watched rehearsals for the second semi-final and highlighted Switzerland’s Nemo as a possible winner after seeing the staging for The Code.
An ARIA for the show
Scott revealed that the afternoon programme had won Best Music Entertainment Show at the ARIAS.
He thanked the Radio 2 team, listeners and Steve Wright, whose afternoon slot Scott had inherited.
Scott revisited some of the listeners who had helped define the programme, including the caller who wiped her boyfriend’s feet with antibacterial wipes and the woman who performed all of Rapper’s Delight from a supermarket car park.
Aiko
Czechia’s Aiko joined Scott shortly before rehearsing Pedestal.
She described it as an energetic rock song and a self-love anthem that reflected her personality.
Scott compared its sound with Avril Lavigne, Republica, Garbage and Olivia Rodrigo.
Aiko explained that she was already dressed in her stage costume because rehearsal was only minutes away.
She had previously lived in Brighton and London and said Eurovision was the largest audience she had faced.
Olly Alexander
Scott also spoke to the UK’s Olly Alexander during the final build-up.
They discussed the pressure of rehearsals, the audience response to Dizzy and the emotional experience of representing the UK.
The Birthday Game: Emily
Emily from Sheffield turned 52 and had played mellophone in competitive marching bands.
She had toured America and competed at world-championship level.
Emily wanted 1980s pop, George Michael, ABBA or something cheesy.
Her first spin was Adamski featuring Seal with Killer. She rejected it.
The second was Fairground Attraction’s Perfect, which matched her preferred decade. Emily gambled again.
Her compulsory final song was Akon’s Lonely, number one in 2006.
She admitted that she might have preferred Perfect but accepted the result.
Handover
