Austin Butler’s Elvis voice
The BAFTA nominations were announced, with All Quiet on the Western Front leading and Elvis receiving nine nominations.
Scott discussed Austin Butler’s continued Elvis Presley accent.
Butler had spent years studying Elvis’s movements and voice for the film, and listeners debated whether the accent had become permanent or whether he was deliberately maintaining it.
Scott compared it with people who returned from short holidays having apparently acquired a new accent.
Dating auditions
After Carol Vorderman discussed having several “special friends”, Scott invited listeners to pitch themselves as possible dates.
Gary described himself as in his late 50s, six foot two, with his own teeth and hair.
Scott thought the audition sounded promising until Bobby Pryor decided Gary was too tall for her.
Other listeners submitted descriptions that resembled personal adverts, including several people who were already married and therefore did not understand the assignment.
The Birthday Game: Nadine
Nadine from St Austell turned 50.
She owned a bright-yellow kayak and had researched every possible number one from her birthday, arriving with a list of preferred songs.
Her first spin produced an Elvis Presley song from Jailhouse Rock. Nadine rejected it.
Her second was White Town’s Your Woman, number one in 1997.
It appeared on her prepared list, so she accepted it immediately.
Listeners celebrated the choice and remembered buying the single on cassette.
The Music Police
Scott returned to Adam’s unidentified dance track.
Adam could reproduce the melody but could not name the song, and several earlier suggestions had failed.
The programme tested more possibilities while listeners continued sending voice notes and messages.
A later update identified the song as the Imanbek remix of Saint Jhn’s Roses, ending the case that had frustrated Adam.
Scott celebrated the breakthrough as proof that the Music Police could eventually solve almost any earworm.
Handover
Scott handed over to Sara Cox after previewing Friday’s Wonder Years.
