Surprising substitutions
Nat contacted Scott after ordering Mr Sheen furniture polish and receiving a women’s bidet instead.
She found the substitution so absurd that she suspected the person packing the order had done it deliberately.
Other listeners quickly supplied examples.
Fish Food ice cream had been replaced with breaded fish fillets.
Bean sprouts became Brussels sprouts.
Mr Kipling lemon slices became pitta breads.
Cornflakes became cornflour.
One customer ordered six bananas and received six entire bunches.
Another requested sponge scourers and received a sponge cake.
A listener ordering strawberry laces sweets was sent red shoelaces, while somebody asking for bleach received orange juice.
Scott concluded that some substitutions followed a kind of faulty word association rather than any practical attempt to replace the product.
Music Police update
Scott confirmed that Adam’s long-running mystery had been solved as the Imanbek remix of Saint Jhn’s Roses.
A new listener, Carrie, then sent a melody she could not place.
The programme opened another case and asked listeners to identify it.
The Birthday Game: Peter
Peter turned 64 while working through tax returns.
He was a major Strictly Come Dancing fan and had attended a recording during Scott’s year on the programme.
Before the broadcast began, Peter and his wife were selected from the audience to dance a foxtrot to The Monkees’ Daydream Believer.
Len Goodman’s wife Sue mouthed “foxtrot” to help them, and the audience judges awarded four tens.
Peter shared his birthday with Gary Barlow, Will Young, Joe Swash, Heather Small and Buzz Aldrin.
His first Birthday Game spin was Jennifer Lopez. Peter rejected it.
The second was Mud’s Tiger Feet, number one in 1974. He rejected that too and accepted the compulsory final spin.
The final song was Shawn Mendes’s Stitches, which had topped the chart in 2016.
Peter was happier with the result than Scott expected after the earlier choices.
Miley Cyrus and Flowers
Scott discussed the rumours surrounding Miley Cyrus’s new single Flowers.
Fans had connected its release date and lyrics with her former marriage to Liam Hemsworth.
Scott stressed that none of the theories had been verified, but said the speculation had become an effective marketing campaign because listeners were promoting the song while debating its meaning.
The Wonder Years
The Friday Wonder Years began in 1991 and moved through the decade.
Scott included TLC’s Creep from 1994 and Daft Punk from 1997 among the selections.
He also recapped the week, including Stacey Solomon’s Same Interview, Ham the duck and the rescued BBC Breakfast sofa.
