3 August 2022: Barryoke returned for one final song as Scott and Chris announced their Newquay farewell week

The show was going back to Newquay

Scott was still broadcasting from home, but the bigger announcement was about where the programme would be the following week.

Scott and Chris were taking the show to Newquay in Cornwall.

The place meant far more to them than an ordinary outside broadcast location.

When they first became friends, Chris would often travel with Scott to Newquay while Scott was DJing there.

They remembered club nights, mini-holidays, a pink limousine from the airport and the strange experience of Scott being handed a flyer advertising his own DJ set by somebody who clearly had no idea who he was.

Going back near the end of their Radio 1 run felt deliberately full-circle.

They planned to adapt old features for the beach, including versions of The Golden Shot, Stupid Street and Brother or Lover.

Barryoke went all the way back to 2008

The day’s major returning feature was Barryoke.

The idea had begun in 2008 and required people called Barry to sing karaoke while changing the lyrics so they contained their own name.

Scott remembered the show eventually taking the concept to Biggleswade for a live Barryoke event.

Old performances included “Barrylujah” and a Barry-based version of *Pretty Fly (For a White Guy)*.

The feature was magnificently stupid and required no deeper explanation.

That simplicity was exactly why listeners had remembered it.

One more Barry got the microphone

For the final outing, the programme played a newly recorded Barryoke performance from another Barry, backed by a choir.

Scott treated the moment with all the ceremony of a major musical farewell even though the entire concept still rested on replacing words with “Barry”.

It was one of the clearest signs of what the last month was becoming.

The show was not attempting to invent a completely different ending.

It was going back through the bits listeners still quoted years later and giving them a proper final appearance.

The countdown now had a destination

By the end of Wednesday, two things were fixed.

The last show would be on 25 August.

Before then, Scott and Chris were going back to Newquay, one of the places most closely tied to the early years of their friendship.

Barryoke had been put to bed.

Next came Cornwall.
