8 May 2008: Beccy’s Classified Bargains and the Kent Road Mystery

Beccy’s been trawling internet classifieds for bizarre bargains, while the team finally reveals the answer to an unexpectedly popular question about how many kilometres of road have been built in Kent since 1996.

The show opens with Scott recounting a street fight that broke out after the previous night’s show, where he was on the phone to rugby international Ben Cohen when things kicked off. He demonstrates his signature de-escalation move — jazz hands and repeated “whoas” — which prompts Chappers to compare him to Flo Rida.

The Wing Ring feature follows, with caller Rian requesting a song for her sister Rachel, who was badly bitten by a dog while on holiday and required surgery. Rachel’s a fan after discovering Wing on YouTube, and the team manages to get Rachel on the phone to receive the Wing Ring message, leaving her emotional and grateful.

A lighter segment follows with caller Karen from the Scottish Borders, who’s been considering skinny dipping to cool off in 32-degree heat. Scott and the team discuss the potential hazards — seaweed, rocks — before politely shutting down the conversation.

The main event is Beccy’s classified finds. Greg James reads a selection of genuine items for sale: a guinea pig exhibition cage (£35), a four-in-one screwdriver swap-for-trade item (the seller aggressively warns against low-ball offers), a Japanese sword (£20), a used Lady Shaver (£5), and most memorably, port holes (£45 the pair) and a transexual rocking horse art piece by Jay Love (£100, with removable details, 31x43x12 inches).

The episode’s running joke builds around the Kent road question. Earlier in the week, listeners were asked to guess how many kilometres of road had been built in Kent since 1996, and the response has been overwhelming — including abuse and frustrated texts. After much teasing and a caller’s mother threatening to “go foot in the kitchen” if she doesn’t get the answer, Scott finally reveals it: 344 kilometres.
