26 July 2022: Scott and Chris discovered “poonami” and announced a final week in Newquay

One advert had introduced an entirely new word

Scott and Chris had seen a television advert for nappies using the word “poonami”.

The voiceover delivered it completely seriously, as though every adult in Britain had been using the term for years.

Neither of them had heard it before.

Listeners quickly explained that parents absolutely did know the word.

It described the moment when the contents of a nappy escaped with such force that ordinary language no longer seemed sufficient.

Scott and Chris were obsessed.

They wanted to hear “poonami” used in ordinary conversation, songs and anywhere else it could possibly fit.

“Seven Nation Army” almost immediately became “Seven Nation Poon Army”.

Brother or Lover featured Nathan and Natalie

Nathan and Natalie from Sheffield played the day’s game.

Their relationship was unusually blunt from the beginning.

Nathan said that if he had to dedicate a Radio 1 song to Natalie, it might be Stormzy’s “Shut Up”.

Natalie said his social-media profile picture was not attractive.

She looked after his border collie every day and admitted there had been moments when she wanted to block him on WhatsApp.

LaChilla then established that Natalie had once handled Nathan’s snooker cue.

The mixture of affection and irritation split the team.

They were brother and sister

The reveal confirmed Nathan was Natalie’s brother.

In retrospect, the level of disrespect suddenly made perfect sense.

The team had been divided, but Scott and Chris had correctly recognised sibling energy beneath the arguments.

Newquay was getting a final visit

The show then revealed something far more significant for its own history.

During one of their final Radio 1 weeks, Scott and Chris would broadcast from Newquay.

The place mattered to both of them.

Before Chris became a permanent member of the programme, he and Scott had spent weekends there DJing, particularly around Berties nightclub.

Those trips helped turn them from colleagues into close friends.

Returning there before the end felt like deliberately going back to one of the places where their partnership had started.

Charlie Puth wanted Innuendo Bingo

The nostalgia was spreading internationally.

Charlie Puth had contacted the show after watching old Innuendo Bingo clips.

He wanted to take part before they left.

More importantly, he was apparently willing to arrange travel around it.

Scott loved the fact that a major American pop star had discovered one of the programme’s stupidest features years after its peak and now wanted to fly in for the experience.

Pop stars made farewell jingles

The pair had also been messaging artist friends asking for quick voice-note versions of their songs turned into personalised jingles.

Tinie Tempah adapted “Remind Me”.

Leah Kate attempted a “10 Things I Hate About You” version listing things she loved about the show.

Ella Henderson had already contributed her “21 Reasons” version.

The recordings were rough, immediate and frequently required production to become usable.

That made them better rather than worse.

Poonami reached Bangers

By Bangers, the day’s new word had already escaped containment.

The White Stripes’ “Seven Nation Army” was introduced as Seven Nation Poon Army and selected by the listener.

A word Scott and Chris had apparently never heard 24 hours earlier had taken over the show by mid-afternoon.
