Scott begins two weeks on Breakfast
Scott and Chris moved onto Radio 1’s Breakfast Show while Nick Grimshaw took two weeks off. Scott began by forgetting whether Grimmy’s birthday was that day or the day before, continuing a long tradition of recognising birthdays only after somebody else reminded him.
The morning brought an important booking. Daniel Radcliffe had watched Matthew Lewis and Gerard Butler play Innuendo Bingo and agreed to face Chris on Tuesday. Scott was delighted that a game which had once soaked Chico could now attract major film stars who arrived having done their research.
Ellie Goulding’s Instagram karaoke
Ellie Goulding had posted herself singing karaoke online. Scott admired the lack of ceremony: a global pop star could still film a casual performance and share it in the same way as everybody else.
The clip fed into a morning of famous people doing unexpectedly ordinary things, exactly the territory Scott and Chris wanted for the Breakfast Show. Taylor Swift’s new music was being rumoured, Rihanna was reportedly preparing a return and Daniel Radcliffe would soon sit in front of a bucket.
Fifty Shades becomes a cat film
An online parody had remade the Fifty Shades of Grey trailer with kittens. “Mr Grey will see you, meow” established the approach, while the central cat had been given conspicuous human abdominal muscles.
The dialogue became feline wherever possible. Christian Grey exercised control over “all feline things”, questions about his interests referred to nine lives and ordinary romantic tension was replaced by purring. Scott thought he might prefer it to the actual film.
More inventors come forward
Listeners continued claiming ownership of familiar ideas. Becky said she had invented the power nap at university in Manchester in 2002 by adding “power” to an ordinary short sleep. Scott pointed out that the phrase and the practice were already established.
Other supposed breakthroughs included biting both ends off a Twix and using it as a straw, placing hands together to form a heart and countless expressions born inside university friendship groups. The more ordinary the idea, the more certain somebody was that nobody else had done it first.
The show ended with the first of Scott’s Big Friday remixes before the full Breakfast run began on Monday with Rizzle Kicks.
