30 May 2022: Scott and Chris relived riding Billie Eilish onto stage after Big Weekend in Coventry

Big Weekend had happened and everybody was exhausted

The first show back was almost entirely an aftermath programme.

Listeners sent messages about favourite sets, emotional moments and the strange pleasure of seeing the whole Radio 1 operation gathered in one place again.

Becky Hill received particular praise.

So did Harry Styles, including the moment he spoke about kindness and the crowd responded warmly.

Scott and Chris were tired but clearly still operating on the adrenaline of the weekend.

Scott had one missing hoodie

Before Coventry, Scott had packed spare hoodies because he knew staff would get cold once the temperature dropped in the evening.

People laughed at him for behaving like the sensible parent of the group.

Then Friday night arrived and everybody wanted one.

Most were eventually returned.

One black hoodie was still missing.

Scott had suspicions about where it might have ended up after a late night but decided not to name names.

He simply requested its return after a very hot wash.

Chris delivered a completely unreliable guide to Coventry

The show replayed the guide Chris had performed on the BBC Introducing stage.

It sounded authoritative enough if nobody checked a single fact.

He mixed genuine Coventry references with invented history, confused famous names and confidently attached celebrities to stories which belonged to entirely different people.

The crowd gradually realised that factual accuracy was not really the point.

Chris treated the city’s ring road, nightlife and local legends with the seriousness of a heritage documentary while repeatedly getting the heritage wrong.

The Billie Eilish horse actually happened

Then came the moment which had sounded impossible earlier in the week.

Scott and Chris changed into the borrowed pantomime horse behind the stage.

Chris took the front.

Scott became the back end.

They then carried out the plan to help bring Billie Eilish onto the Big Weekend stage.

Scott’s view of the event was particularly limited because from inside the rear of the costume he could mainly see the floor, his trainers and whatever Chris was doing immediately in front of him.

Only afterwards, through photographs and videos, could he properly understand how absurd the whole thing looked.

It instantly became one of those Big Weekend moments the show would be able to replay for years.

Even the smaller stages had produced favourites

The pair also talked about the Radio 1 Relax area, dance performances and clashes between acts which forced listeners to choose one favourite over another.

That was the nature of the weekend.

Nobody could see everything.

But everybody came back with a slightly different version of the same festival.

Scott and Chris’s version happened to involve a missing hoodie, an inaccurate history lecture and one of the world’s biggest artists being greeted by a pantomime horse.
