The Young Farmers still knew every word
Scott and Chris began with the aftermath of a DJ set for the Young Farmers in Blackpool.
Years earlier, the show had rewritten Avicii’s “Waiting for Love” with farming lyrics about milking cows, slurry and Sunday lunch. They had assumed it was the sort of old bit only they would remember.
Instead, the crowd still knew it.
The situation became even stranger when professional dancers appeared either side of the pair and committed fully to interpretive choreography while Scott sang about agricultural life.
Chris was particularly impressed that the dancers never broke character, even when the lyrics became increasingly ridiculous.
Scott wanted to know what actually happened at the Met Gala
Pictures from the Met Gala were everywhere, but Scott had a basic question.
What happened after everyone walked up the famous steps?
There were no awards to hand out, and the television coverage mainly consisted of celebrities arriving in extraordinary outfits.
Listeners explained that the event involved a dinner, performances and fundraising for the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Scott remained amused that one of the world’s most photographed nights still left much of the actual event hidden from everybody watching at home.
The Spaceman high-note challenge began
Eurovision was approaching and the show’s confidence in Sam Ryder was rising by the day.
One part of “Spaceman” especially fascinated them: the huge high note Sam repeatedly hit during the song.
Scott and Chris decided the only way to appreciate how difficult it was would be to try it themselves.
The results were not encouraging.
Chris attacked the note with enthusiasm but nowhere near Sam’s range. Scott tried adjusting where he started, only to decide his second attempt was worse than the first.
Producer Joel Corry, who generally hired other people to sing on his records, had also been persuaded to send in an attempt.
His contribution neatly demonstrated why he was better known as a producer and DJ.
Listeners then began sending their own versions, including trained singers who came much closer than the presenters.
The exercise only increased the show’s respect for what Sam was preparing to do live in front of Europe.
Big Weekend tickets produced another memorable caller
The programme also continued giving away tickets to Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Coventry.
Caller Adrian won a pair and instantly became one of Scott and Chris’s favourite contestants of the week.
When given the chance to gamble the tickets for four, he sensibly refused.
He already had exactly what he wanted, tickets for himself and his husband, and saw no reason to risk them.
By the end of the afternoon, May had properly started: Eurovision obsession, old Young Farmers nonsense and Big Weekend excitement were all running at once.
