15 February 2021: Harry’s flatmate impersonated his future father-in-law during the most stressful phone call of his life

Ali Plumb began an A-to-Z movie marathon

Radio 1 movie expert Ali Plumb had been given a lockdown challenge.

Watch a film for every letter of the alphabet.

Listeners were helping choose the titles.

Ali had already moved through A, B and C, with Scott and Chris debating what he should watch for D.

*Dirty Dancing* was one suggestion.

The marathon also served as a reminder of the huge collection of movie interviews and features sitting on BBC iPlayer.

Scott openly admired the way Ali could get major stars to answer questions which would probably receive nothing useful if Scott asked them.

Harry had been planning a proposal for months

Listener Harry had decided he wanted to propose to his girlfriend.

He also wanted to do things the old-fashioned way and ask her father first.

Coronavirus made that harder.

He could not simply arrange a normal visit.

So Harry texted his prospective father-in-law and asked whether they could have a phone call.

The reply was short:

fine.

Harry immediately became nervous.

The withheld number arrived almost instantly

Harry’s flatmate knew exactly what was happening.

He called Harry from a withheld number and pretended to be the girlfriend’s dad.

Harry had no reason to suspect anything.

He was already wearing a fitness tracker.

His heart rate jumped from a resting level of around 50 to 149 beats per minute.

He thought one of the most important conversations of his life had begun.

Then the deception became clear.

Scott and Chris were appalled and impressed in equal measure.

The prank was brutal.

The story also provided a warning for anybody planning a serious phone call around friends with too much time on their hands.

Drivers License was making listeners cry on command

Olivia Rodrigo’s *drivers license* remained one of the defining songs of early 2021.

The show found listeners who said they genuinely cried almost every time it played.

Scott and Chris tested the claim.

For some people the reaction was not exaggerated at all.

The song had become emotionally connected to breakups, loneliness and months of lockdown.

The Who Game remembered cereal adverts and upside-down calculator words

Monday’s Who Game produced another collection of recent relics.

Old cereal adverts returned.

So did writing rude words on calculators by turning the display upside down.

The classic sequence producing BOOBS received far more discussion than a mathematical object probably deserved.

Flickr, free pens with life insurance and S Club Juniors all received Whooo status too.

Racehorse or Drag Queen closed the quiz

The familiar impossible-name round returned.

Scott and Chris again tried to identify whether elaborate names belonged at a racecourse or on a drag stage.

Their methods remained mostly instinct, stereotype and luck.
