8 September 2020: Game of Throw-Ins left Scott baffled by fantasy-football puns

Fantasy football had returned and Scott was already lost

The new football season meant fantasy leagues were being created everywhere.

Scott had tried fantasy football before and quickly lost interest because keeping track of players every week required far more effort than he wanted to give it.

Chris was more interested in the team names.

Examples included Game of Throw-Ins, “Is Your Motherwell?”, “Netflix and Chilwell” and Diego Starbucks, a play on Diego Costa.

The problem was that each joke required Chris to explain the footballer or club behind it.

Scott increasingly felt like the only person at a party who had not been told why everybody was laughing.

A listener quite reasonably pointed out that Scott also presented on 5 Live.

Blow Your Own Trumpet celebrated tiny victories

Tuesday’s trumpet returned.

Caitlin proudly announced that after five years she could still remember the periodic-table song and proceeded to perform it.

Joel had finally registered himself with a doctor rather than relying on his mum.

Abby had managed to make lunch out of a forgotten cucumber found at the back of the fridge.

Each achievement received the same ridiculous trumpet fanfare.

Zoom clothing still had hidden dangers

Listener Maya had perfected the work-from-home uniform.

Businesslike shirt on top.

Blanket and flip-flops below.

The only problem was remembering not to stand up while the camera was still on.

That led into more stories of dogs, relatives and badly timed interruptions appearing during video calls.

Connell’s chain still had a life beyond Normal People

The show checked in on one of lockdown’s strangest cultural celebrities: Connell’s chain from *Normal People*.

The jewellery had attracted its own social-media following months earlier.

By September, the show was amused that an ordinary chain had maintained enough fame to deserve an update long after the programme’s first rush of attention.

Don’t Look It Up covered more unusual versions of pop songs

The quiz included unexpected covers and another set of questions designed to punish anyone who reached automatically for Google.

Scott and Chris remained determined to keep the lockdown quiz alive even as many other early-pandemic habits disappeared.
