28 November 2019: Tingle Toes Tony told Simon the gloriously detailed story of his conception

Hot for Stephen Graham had become a movement

The reaction to Stephen Graham’s threatening Christmas songs had grown overnight. Listeners were still emailing to say how much they liked his voice, while one had already made a techno remix from the Santa Claus recording.

The show discovered that Graham had in fact already read a CBeebies Bedtime Story, slightly undermining their suggestion that the BBC should immediately book him for one. It did nothing to stop the audience enthusiasm, which had now expanded into jokes about being “hot for Stephen Graham” and “gay for Graham”.

One member of the team was banking Christmas content

Scott then discovered that somebody on the team had staged an entire Christmas photo shoot in a department store but did not intend to post the pictures immediately.

The plan was to bank the photographs and release them gradually through December, creating the impression of a steady stream of festive activity. The same person admitted doing something similar with summer holiday pictures.

Listeners confessed to their own versions of content hoarding. One caller had even saved photographs of an unreliable car in different states of repair so that old breakdown pictures could later support excuses for being late.

Simon had spent years refusing to hear the story

Where Do You Think They Were introduced Simon and his dad Tony. Tony had tried to tell his son the conception story before, but Simon had always stopped him. Radio 1 removed that escape route.

Tony’s clues were a birthday party, tingling and an enthusiastic noise which Scott struggled to interpret. He then took the story back to early March, when the couple had gone to a party at his sister’s house. The wine was flowing and the atmosphere built from there.

A new bed became part of the family history

The couple eventually returned home and Tony identified their brand new bed as the place where Simon was conceived. He described the journey and the moment with such enthusiasm that Scott repeatedly had to regain control of the feature.

Tony compared himself to a steam train and even supplied sound effects. His most memorable detail was that his toes tingled afterwards, something he took as a sign that the attempt had been successful. That was enough for the studio to rename him Tingle Toes Tony.

The story ended with a genuinely lovely detail

After all the oversharing, Tony explained that he and Simon’s mum had been teenage sweethearts and were still together as they approached 62. Simon, who had dreaded hearing any of the story, admitted that it was at least nice to know he had been made from love.

The combination of Tony’s laugh, train noises, tingling toes and obvious affection made him one of the feature’s most memorable parents. Later callers were still asking for him to come back.
