21 September 2020: Diary of a Fresher began as Heather moved into Newcastle during a pandemic

Scott found himself on OnlyFans — apparently

The week began with Scott trying to understand why people were telling him he had an OnlyFans account.

He did not.

At least, he was fairly sure he did not.

Chris explained the basic idea of the subscription platform while both of them tried to work out what people generally used it for.

Scott issued a fairly clear statement that any account using his identity was not actually him.

He did, however, stop short of ruling out ever joining in the future, largely because Chris immediately suggested there might be a paying audience.

Getting a quiz question felt like a career milestone

The pair also talked about the strange moment when your name turns up as an answer on a television quiz show.

Being recognised in that format felt different from ordinary fame.

It meant you had become sufficiently embedded in popular culture that production teams expected members of the public to know who you were.

Scott and Chris were both fascinated by the idea that appearing as a quiz question might be the point at which somebody had properly “made it”.

Radio 1 needed a fresher on the inside

Normally at this point in September, Scott and Chris would have a very good idea of what Freshers’ Week felt like.

They would be travelling around universities, DJing at events and hearing first-hand what students were doing.

2020 was completely different.

So the show recruited a new student to keep a diary for them.

Heather, from a small village in North Wales, had just moved to Newcastle.

Her first live appearance immediately provided authentic halls atmosphere.

A fire alarm went off while she was speaking.

Scott and Chris had to hang up and call her back.

Heather became the show’s pandemic fresher correspondent

Once the alarm was confirmed as a test, Heather explained what moving in felt like.

There was the normal strangeness of meeting new flatmates and suddenly living away from home.

On top of that came questions no previous generation of freshers had needed to think about.

Who counted as her household?

Who could she mix with?

What happened if somebody in halls tested positive?

What would a night out even look like?

Scott and Chris asked Heather to keep notes and report back each day.

Diary of a Fresher had begun.

Don’t Look It Up returned to forgotten Live Lounges

The quiz included another edition of Live Lounges That Time Forgot.

Jamie Woon received the sort of retro shout-out that delighted Scott because even hearing the name immediately transported the show back to an earlier Radio 1 era.

The segment remained one of the best ways of using the archive without turning the programme into a straightforward nostalgia show.
