17 February 2020: Charlie Hamilton told Radio 1 how he travelled Europe with a ferret

Scott and Chris remembered Caroline Flack

The programme began differently after the death of Caroline Flack over the weekend.

The automatic transcript wrongly substitutes another celebrity’s name in the opening sentences, but Scott explicitly identifies Caroline and the context is unambiguous.

Scott said he had been asked to appear on breakfast television and radio to speak about her that morning but had decided it did not feel right for him.

He and Chris still felt they could not simply begin Monday’s show without acknowledging someone they had known.

Scott remembered Caroline as lovely, kind and incredibly talented, particularly as a natural television presenter who made the job look effortless.

He also remembered how much she had made him laugh.

Chris agreed.

The tribute was brief and personal rather than turning the rest of the programme into something it was not.

The Valentine’s presents had arrived

Before the weekend, Scott and Chris had agreed to buy genuine Valentine’s presents for each other’s partners.

Scott sent something to Chris’s wife.

Chris sent something to Scott’s boyfriend.

Chris briefly forgot the arrangement when a Valentine’s package arrived addressed to his wife and became suspicious about who else might be sending her gifts.

Then he remembered Scott.

The reactions had been recorded and the pair compared whether the gifts they had chosen actually suited the person receiving them.

This was explicitly not the usual family-present stitch-up.

For once, both had attempted to be thoughtful.

Tom survived meeting the parents

The programme also checked back in with Tom, who had arranged a Valentine’s surprise for his relatively new girlfriend.

He had contacted her mum on Facebook and planned to collect the girlfriend from the station instead of the mother.

The plan went wrong because Tom was sent to the wrong station.

Eventually everybody found one another.

Tom then spent time with the family and discovered some of their traditions, including heart-shaped chicken nuggets.

He reported that the first meeting had gone well.

Scott and Chris were particularly relieved because the father’s Thai-boxing background had made them imagine a much more intimidating evening.

Ask Me Anything met Charlie Hamilton

The day’s extraordinary caller introduced himself as Charlie Hamilton.

Charlie had travelled through Europe with his pet ferret, Bandit.

The journey had begun after an extremely difficult period in Charlie’s life involving homelessness, domestic abuse and the end of a long relationship.

He quit his job and decided to travel with the animal he described as his best friend.

Scott and Chris immediately understood why the trip meant far more than novelty tourism.

Bandit went towards the Arctic Circle

Charlie travelled for months through Europe and reached towards the Arctic Circle.

He spent time in places including Berlin.

Later, a new girlfriend joined him and the relationship continued.

By the time of the Radio 1 interview, Charlie was living on a boat, which explained the seagulls audible behind him.

Bandit had since died.

Charlie still spoke about him as a central part of the life-changing trip.

Restaurants had to deal with a ferret

Scott wanted the practical details.

What happened when Charlie entered a pub or restaurant with Bandit on a lead?

People often asked:

“Does your dog bite?”

Charlie had to explain that it was not a dog.

It was a ferret.

Bandit might be given a boiled egg and sit alongside Charlie while he ate.

Customs officials were equally surprised when Charlie truthfully said there was a ferret in the vehicle.

Bandit travelled with the appropriate animal passport and vaccinations.

Lizzo discovered the British “you alright?”

The episode title came from another small cultural misunderstanding.

Chris had not met Lizzo before.

During ordinary pre-interview small talk, somebody used the very British:

“You alright?”

Lizzo explained that, to an American ear, the question sounded as though something was visibly wrong.

For Scott and Chris it meant little more than hello.

The exchange became another example of ordinary British language sounding unexpectedly intense elsewhere.
