5 September 2019: Charli XCX played the Who Game

Listen to this episode

Driving-test disasters kept coming

The show had spent the week making people with tests approaching feel less alone.

Listener Josh supplied one of the strangest pieces of advice.

He was 17, already owned a silver Vauxhall Corsa and desperately wanted to pass.

Older colleagues at his apprenticeship told him the examiner would judge him more favourably if he turned up looking responsible.

Their solution was a full suit.

Shirt.

Trousers.

Tie.

Everything.

Josh believed them.

The driving shoes completed the look

There was another layer.

His colleagues suggested bringing white trainers in a plastic bag and asking the examiner whether he could change into his special driving shoes immediately before the test.

That allowed him to arrive smartly dressed while supposedly demonstrating how seriously he took the practical driving itself.

Scott could hardly believe anybody had persuaded him to do it.

Josh admitted that, looking back, the advice sounded like sabotage.

The story joined the show’s rapidly growing archive of ways not to approach a driving test.

Freshers season had begun

September meant university move-ins.

Scott and Chris began remembering the contents of the free bags handed out by student unions.

Pizza vouchers.

Club-night wristbands.

Snacks.

Leaflets.

Often condoms.

One listener revived the old idea of placing a ketchup bottle in a bedroom window to indicate someone was “feeling saucy”.

The phrase belonged firmly enough to the past for the Who Game.

Scott also spoke to a family driving a new student towards university, the car packed with clothes, sports kit, kitchen equipment and the accumulated objects required for moving into halls.

The programme would spend the rest of September adopting a Fresher of the Week.

Charli XCX entered the Who Game

The main guest was Charli XCX.

The source’s automatic transcript repeatedly substitutes unrelated names around her introduction, but the programme title and the actual conversation identify Charli clearly.

She played the Who Game against Scott, Chris and listeners.

The objective was to name something once extremely familiar but now old enough for everybody to shout:

“Who?”

Club biscuits and horsemeat returned

Examples included the old Club biscuit advert, remembered for the line about liking a lot of chocolate on your biscuit.

The horsemeat scandal became another entry.

So did the era when cereal boxes regularly contained a free toy.

The game worked because none of these things had genuinely vanished from everybody’s memory.

They sat just far enough back to produce an instant rush of recognition.

Charli understood the premise and joined in rather than treating the old references as somebody else’s nostalgia.

Superfan Steve returned by request

Listeners had also been asking to hear Rylan’s encounter with Superfan Steve again.

Scott and Chris replayed the moment because it had become one of the character’s strongest examples.

Even after Superfan Steve had existed long enough for people in showbusiness to know about him, Rylan had still been drawn into the strange fan’s impossible knowledge.

September’s first week ended looking both forwards and backwards.

Freshers were arriving.

Live Lounge Month had started.

And an old cereal-box toy could still stop the show.
