17 September 2019: Katie discovered she could become Pam Boleyn

Lauren had not stayed in

Scott and Chris checked on Fresher of the Week Lauren the morning after her first proper student night.

She sounded considerably worse.

Freshers flu appeared to be creeping in.

The heels she wore out had ended up in her hands.

She finished the night around a kebab shop and woke with painful blisters.

Lauren suggested she might stay in that evening.

Scott and Chris did not believe her.

They had already learned enough about freshers to know the sentence “I’m not going out tonight” was often temporary.

Katie’s itinerary began filling up

The Scott Mills Travel Agency was properly open.

Listeners had heard Chicago-based Katie explain what she wanted from her first trip to Britain.

Old buildings.

Castles.

Harry Potter.

Tea.

History.

And Anne Boleyn.

The audience produced a clear recommendation.

Edinburgh.

The city offered exactly the concentration of old architecture and dramatic history Katie had imagined.

Listeners mentioned the castle, Greyfriars Kirkyard and the places associated with the early Harry Potter writing story.

Scott immediately started treating Edinburgh as one of the core stops on her itinerary.

The Anne Boleyn escape room was even more specific

Then somebody sent a recommendation almost absurdly tailored to Katie.

An Anne Boleyn-themed escape room in Norfolk.

The experience involved Tudor history and role-play around Anne Boleyn and Henry VIII.

Scott and Chris became fascinated by the possibility of entering as members of the Boleyn family.

They started inventing relatives.

Jeff Boleyn.

Pam Boleyn.

The title Pam Boleyne became the joke.

Scott loved that Katie had crossed the Atlantic to discover British history and Radio 1 had already turned one of the most famous Tudor families into a collection of ordinary-sounding relatives.

Sophie received a message after midnight

Someone on the show team, Sophie, then shared a Facebook message which had arrived from a man she knew at university.

She barely used Facebook anymore and only discovered it later.

The man wrote that Sophie had appeared on his timeline and reminded him he had always had a bit of a soft spot for her at university.

Was she seeing anyone?

Would she like to go for a drink?

The message itself was polite.

The timing made Scott and Chris suspicious.

Around quarter past midnight.

The same words sounded completely different three ways

Sophie had a boyfriend.

She was still unsure how to interpret the old acquaintance’s message.

Scott and Chris therefore had the text voiced in several styles.

Confident.

Sheepish.

Seedy.

Exactly the same wording sounded completely different depending on the performance.

Listeners were asked whether Sophie should reply and, if so, what she should say.

Her boyfriend already knew about the message and was not especially threatened by it.

The audience still had strong opinions.

The story would continue on Wednesday.

Jordan North joined Funny Business

Jordan North joined for another edition of Funny Business.

As usual, the show called genuine companies whose names sounded much harder to say innocently once the presenters knew why listeners had nominated them.

Jordan understood the format immediately.

The business on the other end generally sounded far more professional than Radio 1.

The travel agency had become a real feature

By the end of Tuesday, Katie already had enough recommendations to turn her first British trip into a complicated itinerary.

Scott was thriving in his new role.

The only risk was that a listener who genuinely needed holiday advice had now put a man who struggled to say no in charge of their entire trip.
