28 August 2019: Joel Corry apologised for being the world’s worst wingman

Scott was still awkward greeting pop stars

Joel Corry returned after a successful summer and a big Reading appearance.

Before the game had even begun, Scott admitted he still did not know how to greet celebrities naturally.

Joel had once offered a handshake.

Scott accepted it and then pulled him into a hug.

Chris remembered going through a phase where he simply kissed people on the forehead because taking control removed the uncertainty.

Scott thought that sounded considerably worse.

The programme then replayed the ultimate example of Scott’s guest awkwardness:

telling Taylor Swift twice that he would see her at Big Weekend when she was not booked to play it.

“Sorry” became a game

Joel’s hit was called “Sorry”.

That was enough for Radio 1 to build a feature around people Joel might actually owe an apology.

Three stories were presented.

Only one was genuine.

Joel had to work out which person he had truly wronged.

The first accusation came from somebody who claimed Joel encouraged people to go skinny-dipping in Zante before the caller returned to find clothes, phone and wallet missing.

Joel denied it.

The second claimed a holiday crowd had been unexpectedly soaked by Joel urinating from a roof in Sunny Beach.

Joel denied that too.

The stories were ridiculous enough to make him genuinely nervous about what number three might contain.

Jake was the real apology

The final caller was Jake, one of Joel’s friends from the summer resort circuit.

Jake’s complaint was much simpler and much more believable.

Joel was supposed to act as a useful wingman.

Instead, he repeatedly left clubs with somebody else and abandoned Jake.

Joel recognised the story.

He accepted that this was the apology he genuinely owed.

Scott added emotional music.

Joel delivered a heartfelt, deliberately over-serious apology promising to become a better wingman in future.

A track called Sorry had finally forced him to say the word properly.

The intern had tricked Scott too

The show then returned to the socially painful challenge given to its new intern.

She approached people as if they had met before and watched to see whether they corrected her.

This time the production team admitted Scott and Chris had also been targets.

Someone repeatedly called one of them Simon.

Rather than immediately say that was not his name, the presenter hesitated and tried to work out whether he had misunderstood.

The entire interaction had been secretly recorded.

Scott was amazed the game had managed to get him after he already knew how it worked.

Bamboleo survived the embarrassment

Wednesday still required Bamboleo.

Listeners chose the usual old clips for the instrumental gap while Scott and Chris recovered from the intern revelation.

The programme had trained a new staff member to manufacture awkward social situations.

Within weeks, she had turned the technique back on the presenters themselves.
