24 July 2019: James the PI joined Radio 1’s nationwide search for Greg and Grimmy

Greg and Grimmy had survived the night

By Wednesday afternoon, Greg James and Nick Grimshaw had been hidden for more than 21 hours.

Radio 1’s previous Hide & Seek had lasted a little over 22 hours.

Scott and Chris therefore knew the second attempt was approaching serious territory.

The whole station had been analysing clues since Tuesday.

Listeners had driven to landmarks, investigated towns and contacted the programme with theories.

Scott no longer trusted anything.

A clue could be genuine.

It could also be there purely to waste everyone’s time.

James the PI returned

The show brought back James, the private investigator who had become part of several earlier Radio 1 mysteries.

If anybody could impose some order on the chaos, Scott thought it might be him.

James listened to the evidence and helped turn a national map into a more manageable list.

The source records possibilities including Newquay, Brighton, Southend, Southampton and Plymouth, alongside another location too garbled in the transcript to preserve confidently.

The crucial development came when Greg and Grimmy confirmed that their hiding place was on the narrowed list.

For the first time, the search felt genuinely close.

A plane clue pointed towards donkeys

One of the more elaborate clues involved an aircraft flying overhead with a code.

Listeners and the team gradually linked the message with donkeys.

That sent people towards seaside towns and locations where donkey rides or related references might make sense.

Other theories played with words such as key and quay.

Scott and Chris repeatedly discovered that almost any clue could be made to point towards several British coastal towns if enough imagination was applied.

A sandwich shop became a witness appeal

Then came a detail which sounded like something from *Crimewatch*.

Someone connected with the hiding team had visited a nearby sandwich shop at around 1.30pm.

While there, they overheard two people talking about Radio 1 Hide & Seek.

Those people apparently had no idea Greg and Grimmy were nearby.

One ordered a chicken salad sandwich on brown bread.

Scott and Chris launched an appeal.

Had any listener been discussing Hide & Seek in a sandwich shop at about that time?

Could they remember where they were?

A completely ordinary lunch order had become potential evidence in a national radio investigation.

Nando’s helped rule places out

The team also used ordinary chain restaurants as geographical evidence.

One clue connected with Nando’s.

That allowed some places to be ruled out, including the Isle of Wight, because the required restaurant was not there.

Scott liked how detective work had descended into checking branch locations.

The search had become part cryptic puzzle, part Google Maps and part takeaway directory.

Jordan North chased another theory

Jordan North was on the road following clues.

He had previously considered Edinburgh and now headed towards Portsmouth, including the Spinnaker Tower area.

Jordan sounded exhausted.

The game required presenters to commit physically to theories which could become useless minutes later.

Listeners were doing exactly the same thing in their own cars.

Blackpool was ruled out

One listener went towards Blackpool Tower and used the show’s catchphrase or agreed signal to test whether Greg and Grimmy were nearby.

Nothing happened.

Blackpool could be removed from the board.

Scott celebrated every location ruled out almost as much as a positive clue.

There were fewer places left to search.

The source ends before the discovery

The supplied 24 July transcript remains inside the live investigation.

Greg and Grimmy had not yet been found during the material preserved in this podcast.

The archive therefore leaves the mystery unresolved at the point the source does rather than inserting an outcome from outside the transcript.

Thursday’s daily source moved on to the show’s next stories.
