Big Weekend had taken its toll
The first normal show after Radio 1’s Big Weekend sounded exactly like the aftermath of a festival.
Scott and Chris were tired.
Voices around the station were disappearing.
Everyone had spent several days talking over loud music, moving between stages and staying out later than normal.
Scott nevertheless described Middlesbrough as a brilliant weekend and immediately began picking out favourite moments.
Jax Jones made the whole crowd move
One standout set belonged to Jax Jones.
Scott loved the carnival atmosphere and the way the audience moved together.
At one point, Jax had the crowd shifting left and right almost like one enormous choreographed group.
The visual effect impressed Scott as much as the music.
Then Jax agreed to do something even stranger for Radio 1.
“Jake from Newsbeat” reviewed Jax Jones
After performing, Jax changed his appearance.
Hat.
Raincoat.
Glasses.
The show sent him back into the festival crowd pretending to be Jake from Newsbeat.
His mission was to ask people what they thought of the Jax Jones set they had just watched.
The joke only worked if nobody recognised him.
They did not.
Festivalgoers spoke directly to Jax about Jax Jones without realising the artist himself was conducting the interview.
Scott and Chris loved the complete failure of celebrity recognition.
Thousands of people had just watched him perform.
A few accessories apparently made him invisible.
Chris finally went to the doctor
Chris also spoke more seriously about noticing something unusual with his body and delaying getting it checked for around a week.
Eventually he went to a doctor.
The examination itself made him embarrassed because it involved removing clothes and being physically examined.
Chris stressed that the awkwardness had been far less important than getting reassurance and medical attention.
The programme did not turn the story into a diagnosis.
The point was simpler.
If something worries you, do not put off seeing a doctor purely because the examination might feel embarrassing.
Scott agreed.
Funny Business returned after the festival
Tuesday still meant Funny Business.
Scott and Chris rang more genuine companies with names which became much harder to say once the presenters knew why listeners had nominated them.
After a weekend of huge stages and international pop stars, the programme was delighted to return to one of its smallest, stupidest regular features.
Huw Edwards joined Radio 1
Then Huw Edwards from the BBC’s *News at Ten* came into the show.
Chris described him as a genuine broadcasting hero.
The conversation covered the extraordinary length of some major-news shifts, including election nights where Huw could remain live for hours.
Scott and Chris were fascinated by the concentration required to continue presenting through changing results and breaking information.
A joke around Chris saying something which sounded like “send news” produced the episode title’s BBC Nudes at Ten wordplay.
The source is playful and garbled around the phrase, so the archive keeps the joke without turning it into a literal claim that Chris requested explicit pictures from Huw Edwards.
Big Weekend was over
By the end of Tuesday, the festival had moved into memory.
The show had accumulated enough stories to last several days.
The next one would involve Lewis Capaldi interviewing Anne-Marie because Scott and Chris had been too busy to do the interview themselves.
