23 September 2008: Head Cam arrived and Bob Sinclar asked strangers to smell his cheese

Head Cam replaced the stationary webcam

After the attention around Beccy Cam, the programme looked for a way to make its visual coverage more mobile. Head Cam put a camera directly on a member of the team, giving online viewers whatever happened to be in front of them and making ordinary office behaviour suddenly feel dangerous.

The camera immediately created social risk

The appeal was obvious because nobody could be certain what might be captured. The experiment would later cause Scott problems when a text-message reaction became visible, but even on its first day the idea of a permanently recording point of view was enough to make everyone self-conscious.

Bob Sinclar and Axwell played Smell My Cheese

The DJs were involved in a deliberately sensory street game which asked strangers to identify cheeses by smell. It was the sort of feature whose title did most of the work before anyone had even taken part. What’s Occurring? and Badly Bleeped TV added more familiar games to a show increasingly comfortable combining webcams, dance-music guests and intentionally childish feature names.
