Friday Extra Show: Easter became archive time

Extra podcast edition

Scott joined Chris for a deliberately loose Good Friday edition.

The team had received no serious complaints about the previous archive-heavy Friday show.

That was taken as permission to do it again.

This time the chosen destination was April 2013.

Chris described it as a vintage period for the programme.

Scott argued 2012 might have been even more eventful because he had become single.

Both quickly added that, for the benefit of anybody in management listening, the 2019 show was obviously better than all of it.

Chris tried to make money from naked celebrity drawings

One old business idea came from seeing amateur drawings of celebrities being sold online.

The artist had imagined famous people naked.

Chris decided he could enter the same market.

The problem was that he could barely draw.

Scott was the most obvious celebrity he knew well enough to use as a subject.

Scott was completely opposed to the business plan.

Chris believed there might be money in it.

The archive preserved another example of him finding a strange online activity and immediately assuming he could turn it into a career.

Early Little Mix returned

The podcast then went back to an interview with Little Mix from the period when the group were still relatively new.

Scott and Chris joked that people had once questioned whether the name Little Mix was any good.

Years later, the idea that it might not stick sounded ridiculous.

The old interview also demonstrated how much the group’s relationship with Radio 1 had developed since those early appearances.

Jade chose the dare

The most memorable archive moment involved a truth-or-dare setup.

Jade Thirlwall was given a choice.

The truth would expose an embarrassing FaceTime story.

The dare involved eating chocolate from Chris.

Jade chose the dare.

Chris lay down on the studio desk.

Chocolate buttons were placed on his torso.

One ended up in or around his belly button.

Jade had to retrieve it.

The programme repeatedly tried to reassure everybody that this counted as entertainment.

Scott was mostly delighted that an old clip this strange was sitting in the archive waiting to be rediscovered.

Friday Extra had become the show’s time machine

By Easter, the purpose of the extra podcast was clear.

Some weeks it resolved current stories.

Other weeks it opened a random year and found things even Scott and Chris had forgotten they had once asked celebrities to do.

April 2013 supplied Little Mix and the chocolate button.

That was more than enough for one Friday.
