Friday Extra Show: listeners were making their own features
Extra podcast edition
Chris opened with something discovered through his Instagram message-request folder, which he called the Muggle Folder.
Listeners Verity, Ellie and Jess had recreated Scott’s vocal-coach feature during karaoke.
One person sang Rag’n’Bone Man and Calvin Harris’s “Giant”.
Another stood nearby shouting Scott-style emotional instructions.
The imitation was slightly ruder than the version normally heard on Radio 1.
Chris loved that listeners now understood the format well enough to perform it without the programme.
A joke about Scott coaching professional singers had become a pub game.
John Newman got another airing
The podcast replayed more from John Newman’s vocal-coach session.
John had sung “Feelings” while Scott interrupted with literal directions intended to force more emotional delivery.
Chris still thought the concept sounded patronising when explained to an outsider.
Listeners clearly did not care.
They were copying it.
That probably meant the feature was staying.
Southend received the Friday review
Thursday’s Stark History of Southend was revisited with feedback from people who knew the town.
The guide had included the funicular railway, Adventure Island, nightlife and local venues.
Chris’s narration treated the place like the subject of an enormous prestige documentary.
The Extra Show could now find out which parts had actually been useful to the listener planning the trip and which local details had been exaggerated for comedy.
The “Secrets of Southend” label became a fitting name for the Friday follow-up.
Cheryl’s houseboat story expanded
The swim of shame also returned.
Cheryl’s Tinder date had ended with her falling into the water while attempting to step from a houseboat onto the jetty.
Chris still could not get past the mechanics.
The man had fallen asleep during James Bond.
Cheryl had tried to leave without waking him.
She ended up soaked.
The extended cut provided more of the awkward date and escape.
A real narrowboat resident called in
Listener Abby lived on a narrowboat and could answer the practical questions Scott and Chris had generated.
Living aboard was not simply an endless romantic canal holiday.
Space, toilets, water and heating all required planning.
Scott used the conversation to revisit his own previous narrowboat relationship around Rickmansworth.
Chris again enjoyed the fact Scott had apparently spent years holding back an entire boating chapter of his life.
The Friday Extra Show had found its ideal combination.
A local tourism guide.
Listener-made radio features.
And an unnecessary amount of narrowboat detail.
