13 March 2019: Katherine Ryan played Innuendo Bingo as Jeffrey became the cock

Scott’s Welsh homework became serious

With Wales v Ireland only days away, Scott’s attempt to learn Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau had moved beyond a joke.

Welsh listeners were now coaching him.

One caller advised him not to panic if he lost the words during the chorus.

As long as he stayed confident and loudly joined the familiar “gwlad, gwlad” section, the crowd around him would probably carry the rest.

Scott began listening to the anthem repeatedly and practising the sounds rather than trying to understand every word.

The plan for Thursday was even more intimidating.

Welsh rugby legend Shane Williams was going to help.

The cockerel nominations reached the final

Mary’s unnamed cockerel had generated days of nominations.

The final group included several genuinely awful relationship stories.

Kate nominated James, who had moved into her house, brought a sofa, disappeared and later resurfaced largely because he wanted his belongings back.

Colum nominated his brother Dave over behaviour towards a long-term girlfriend.

Harriet nominated her biological father Jeffrey.

Her story became the decisive one.

Jeffrey had an affair with the next-door neighbour, a woman also trusted by the family as a babysitter, while supposedly going out to play snooker.

Scott and Chris decided the cockerel had found its name.

Mary’s bird was officially:

Jeffrey.

A real animal now carried the verdict

The show had already named a snake after one cheating ex.

Jeffrey became the second animal in Radio 1’s growing relationship-revenge collection.

Scott stressed that the real Jeffrey would not be contacted by the programme.

The public naming was about Harriet’s story and the joke, not creating a campaign against a private person.

The cockerel itself appeared unlikely to care.

Katherine Ryan entered Innuendo Bingo

At 3pm, Katherine Ryan arrived for Innuendo Bingo.

The revived feature had already hosted Davina McCall, James Acaster, Josh Widdicombe and Emily Atack.

Katherine immediately understood the assignment.

She and Chris filled their mouths with water while Scott played another selection of accidental television and radio innuendo.

Nature programmes once again supplied particularly dangerous material.

The combination of ordinary factual language and the players already expecting something rude made it almost impossible to survive.

Katherine got soaked.

So did Chris.

Scott considered the booking a success.

Big Weekend tickets created another national mission

Radio 1 Big Weekend tickets were due to go on sale the following afternoon.

Listener Sophie described a multi-device strategy involving phones, computers and anybody she could recruit to improve her chances.

Scott recognised the same anxiety listeners brought to festival ticket sales every year.

At exactly 5pm on Thursday, thousands of people would be performing essentially the same ritual.

Before then, Scott still needed to become Welsh enough to sing the anthem convincingly.
