6 February 2019: Davina McCall got soaked as Innuendo Bingo returned

Radio 1 treated 3pm like an event

The return of Innuendo Bingo had been promoted for weeks.

By Wednesday afternoon, listeners were sending messages saying they had moved meetings, delayed lunch breaks or found somewhere private at work so they could listen.

Scott’s social-media mentions were unusually busy.

The feature had been away long enough for the comeback to feel like a genuine relaunch.

The BBC Two continuity announcer had even promoted the podcast by describing its prank calls and “stupid games”, which Scott and Chris took as a slightly backhanded compliment.

Davina McCall inaugurated the new set

Davina McCall became the first guest of the new era.

The basic rules had not changed.

Chris and Davina filled their mouths with water.

Scott played accidental innuendo from television and radio.

The aim was not to laugh.

The practical result was water being sprayed across the studio.

The difference was the presentation.

The team had built a proper new setup rather than simply recreating the old corner-of-the-studio version.

Davina committed fully and the show was delighted that the revived feature worked immediately.

Scott repeatedly reminded listeners to send in new clips because the game depended on people spotting accidental innuendo elsewhere on the BBC and beyond.

Newport had given Chris a second reason to celebrate

Chris was also still excited about Newport County’s FA Cup run.

The club had progressed again and earned a match against Manchester City.

Scott was slightly baffled by the strength of Chris’s new attachment to Newport, but accepted that recent visits to the club had turned him into a temporary supporter.

The football excitement sat neatly alongside the bigger radio event.

Chris described himself as buzzing from both.

Snake nominations became increasingly brutal

The unnamed Essex python still needed a name.

More listeners nominated ex-partners.

One story involved somebody cheating with the caller’s best friend.

Another involved a relationship ending because the ex had been seeing somebody else at the same time.

The show was initially treating the animal as light Valentine’s revenge.

Some of the stories made the concept feel almost too mild.

Scott and Chris promised a proper decision once the strongest nominations had been heard.

The show had its old rhythm back

Wednesday combined several of the programme’s most recognisable ingredients.

Bamboleo-style archive audio.

Listener relationship chaos.

Football enthusiasm from Chris.

And Innuendo Bingo.

For Scott, the strongest evidence the comeback had worked was how quickly the feature felt as though it had never left.
