8 January 2019: Tinder went down and Radio 1 opened a dating situation room

The 2019 Love Island application had arrived

Scott and Chris had found the application form for the new series of *Love Island*.

They immediately began studying the questions applicants were expected to answer about relationships, previous partners, family and what made them interesting enough for television.

The show wondered whether somebody around Radio 1 could be entered.

The discussion never became a serious casting operation.

It did establish that *Love Island* was already back in the programme’s bloodstream months before the new series actually began.

Foxes were destroying Scott’s sleep

Scott had a more immediate romantic problem outside his own house.

Foxes had been making extraordinary noises late at night.

He had spent several evenings trying to work out whether something terrible was happening outside before discovering the screaming was part of fox mating behaviour.

The show therefore spent part of the afternoon discussing how joyful fox activity could sound exactly like a violent emergency to a human trying to sleep.

Scott wanted the season to end.

The foxes appeared to have no interest in his schedule.

Funny Business found Well Hung and Dirty Dicks

Tuesday brought another edition of Funny Business.

Scott called a door company called Well Hung and tried to conduct a completely normal enquiry while repeatedly having to use the company name.

The man answering remained impressively calm.

Chris then reached Dirty Dicks, a kitchen business whose name had originated decades earlier because the boss was called Richard.

The pair regarded it as one of their strongest rounds.

The joke existed entirely in the names.

The businesses themselves simply carried on being professional while Radio 1 fell apart.

Then Tinder stopped working

The main emergency arrived when Tinder appeared to go down across large parts of Europe.

Scott immediately treated the outage like breaking news.

Listeners sent reports from towns and cities around Britain showing where the app worked and where it did not.

The programme effectively created a Tinder situation room.

One caller, introduced as Ross from Exeter, had a particularly urgent problem.

He had arranged a date but had not taken the woman’s phone number off Tinder.

If the app remained unavailable, he had no way of contacting her.

Her first name was Amber.

Radio 1 attempted the hopeless task of finding her through listeners.

The following day would reveal an even bigger problem with Ross’s story.

Fleas became an entertainment idea

The same show established that humans could be bitten by fleas.

That was enough for Scott to wonder whether he should deliberately experience them “for the show”.

Producer Poppy had lived in a house with fleas and strongly advised against the idea.

She described how difficult they could be to remove once established.

Scott still briefly seemed intrigued by the possibility of acquiring a parasite purely as content.

Nobody around him encouraged it.
