24 January 2019: Sam discovered he was conceived in Vue screen one, row C

Barry Obama was real

Radio 1 followed up the previous day’s claim that a listener’s mum had gone to school with Barack Obama in Hawaii.

The mother, Mary, joined the programme.

She confirmed that Barack Obama had indeed been known as Barry at school.

It had been a large school and she was not pretending they had been close friends.

Scott and Chris nevertheless treated the verification as an extraordinary piece of personal history.

Chris then immediately asked whether she had ever got off with Barry Obama.

She had not.

Scott reminded him that some questions did not need asking.

Sam entered Where Do You Think They Were?

Listener Sam wanted an epic birthday shout-out.

His dad Andrew agreed to provide the necessary price: the conception story.

Andrew remembered an early date at a Vue cinema in Dagenham.

The film was Prêt-à-Porter.

The couple had decided to go big on cinema food with extra-large popcorn, Coke and a foot-long hot dog.

Scott repeatedly returned to the hot cheese.

Sam already regretted volunteering.

Andrew remembered the seats

The lights went down.

The cinema was not busy.

Andrew and Sam’s mum became increasingly affectionate.

Then he supplied the level of detail which made the feature exceptional.

It was screen one.

They were in row C.

The seats were 34 and 35, with 36 occasionally becoming part of the situation.

Scott and Chris could hardly believe the precision.

Sam now had an exact geographical location for the beginning of his life.

A cinema became a spiritual home

Andrew confirmed that the couple never needed to leave the auditorium.

Sam was a genuine cinema conception.

Scott immediately told him that every future trip to Vue would feel different.

Sam agreed.

The next time he entered the building, screen one, row C would become less like ordinary seating and more like a family landmark.

His birthday montage then featured celebrities making jokes about the film, the row and his parents’ lack of interest in remaining fully dressed.

Lewis Capaldi karaoke night was imminent

That evening, Scott, Chris and Lewis Capaldi were due to broadcast live from a small karaoke bar on Instagram.

The month-long Lewis thread had reached its logical conclusion.

He had sung Miley Cyrus unexpectedly.

He had recorded “The Climb” properly.

Now Radio 1 was building an entire night around karaoke with him.
