13 December 2018: Abby discovered she was conceived in an orchestra pit

Chris’s award campaign actually produced awards

A day after Chris announced that he wanted to win almost anything, listeners and businesses started making it happen.

Companies offered certificates and novelty categories.

One organisation suggested an employee-style award despite Chris not actually working there.

Scott treated the entire thing like an awards season built around one man’s desperation to own a trophy.

Chris was completely comfortable with that.

The legitimacy mattered much less than having something he could put on a shelf.

Abby wanted the ultimate birthday shout-out

The latest Where Do You Think They Were? participant was Abby, who was about to turn 25.

Her reward would be the programme’s enormous birthday montage.

Abby said she would happily milk that message every birthday for years.

She also nominated Tom Hardy as the dream celebrity birthday contributor, setting the bar extremely high.

Before she could receive anything, however, mum Tracy had to explain where Abby had been conceived.

Tracy promised the story could beat the bridges, cars and boats the feature had already uncovered.

Tracy played French horn professionally

Before Abby was born, Tracy worked as a professional musician.

She played French horn in the orchestra for a touring stage production.

The musicians sat in an orchestra pit underneath the stage, with the brass section towards the back.

Abby’s father was also a musician and worked in the Royal Marines Band Service.

The pair had met through music.

On the day in question, Tracy had already played the Saturday matinee.

Abby’s father was about to go away on duty and this was their final opportunity to spend time together for a while.

He came to meet her between performances.

They had around an hour and a half before Tracy needed to be ready for the evening show.

The dressing room was too busy

The couple first considered the dressing room.

There were too many people around.

So they went back to the orchestra pit.

It was empty.

Instruments were still around them.

The percussion section was close by.

Scott immediately became obsessed with the possibility that somebody could have added a dramatic drum flourish at the end.

Tracy remained impressively matter-of-fact.

The entire story had taken place in the workplace between two performances.

Abby was horrified and laughing at the same time.

Scott declared it one of the classiest conception locations the programme had found.

Abby joked that she should perhaps receive free theatre tickets for life.

French horns would never sound the same

Scott told Abby that from now on every French horn would remind her of her mother.

The birthday montage then arrived, with messages from Radio 1 names accompanied by suitably classical music.

Abby said she was embarrassed but delighted by the result.

The show had now created another permanent association nobody in the family would ever be able to remove.

The perfume finally had proper notes

Helen from the fragrance project also returned with more detail about the show’s scent.

The perfume had been designed as a unisex fragrance.

Notes included sandalwood and cedarwood, giving something close to the old-paper or old-books smell Scott liked, plus citrus notes including neroli and mandarin.

The much-discussed smell of new tennis balls had been interpreted through a slightly rubbery note.

Scott asked the vital modern question: was it vegan?

Yes.

That conversation somehow led to the discovery of beef candles, which made the already tired Chris feel physically sick.

François the Nose would return on Monday with the finished bottle.

The perfume saga was finally approaching its conclusion.
