13 August 2018: Scott and Chris launched Radio 1’s shortest-ever Breakfast Show

Breakfast had a four-day gap

Nick Grimshaw had finished his run on the Radio 1 Breakfast Show.

Greg James was not starting until the following Monday.

That left four mornings.

Scott and Chris were filling them.

They repeatedly described themselves as being in for absolutely nobody.

The arrangement was so short that they struggled to decide what the show should even be called.

Listeners suggested names for what amounted to the smallest Breakfast Show era in Radio 1 history.

Scott liked the idea that they could technically claim to have launched a brand-new breakfast programme which would be cancelled after four days.

Bangers moved to breakfast

The first Bangers of the temporary run immediately felt different.

People who normally listened in the afternoon could now play while travelling to work.

Matt, 24, became one of the first callers of the week.

Scott offered one choice.

Chris countered with Tinie Tempah’s “Frisky”.

Matt chose Chris.

The time of day had changed.

The result had not.

Greg was secretly practising next door

Greg James was already in the building rehearsing for his proper first Breakfast Show.

Scott and Chris realised they could hear pieces of the practice.

That created the temptation to eavesdrop.

At one point they heard Greg trying timings and links, including getting clock references mixed up.

Scott joked that they could simply put Greg on air early and go home.

They resisted.

The rehearsal was supposed to remain private preparation rather than content for the temporary presenters next door.

They still enjoyed knowing the station’s next era was physically being built on the other side of the wall.

Scott attempted entertainment news

Nobody from the usual entertainment-news team was doing the slot that week, so Scott decided to do it himself.

His stories included speculation about Idris Elba becoming James Bond and Caroline Flack and Andrew Brady apparently reconciling again.

Chris was unimpressed.

He kept telling Scott the stories were not really news.

Scott responded by accusing Chris of criticising his entire entertainment-news career before it had properly started.

The segment then reached Strictly.

Strictly’s celebrities were cheeses

The 2018 contestants were beginning to be revealed.

As usual, the production had given them codenames while identities were secret.

This year’s theme was cheese.

Scott and Chris tried to work backwards from names such as Stinking Bishop and other cheeses to decide which celebrities they represented.

Scott remembered that when he had taken part, his own codename had been Salamander under a different theme.

The code names did not actually provide useful clues.

That did not stop them guessing.

They also knew Radio 1 would be revealing one of the contestants later in the week.

The temporary Breakfast Show may only have had four mornings.

It had already become part of the Strictly announcement machine.
