4 July 2018: England’s penalty win left Chris limping two weeks before his wedding

England’s win produced casualties

England had beaten Colombia on penalties and Chris’s barbecue had become a very enthusiastic celebration.

Too enthusiastic.

During one of the goals, Chris had been standing on a wall.

He fell off it.

By the next day he was limping around Radio 1 and had been to a doctor, who told him the swelling needed to go down before they could properly assess the injury.

The timing was particularly bad.

His wedding was only around two weeks away.

Scott was already head of fashion, so he began considering what could be done if Chris ended up in plaster, including the possibility of a brightly coloured or even glow-in-the-dark cast.

Chris was not the only casualty.

Tom called from an emergency dentist after a celebration had knocked one of his front teeth out.

The tooth was being kept in milk before treatment.

Another listener had a large bruise on his chest after a hug crushed the sunglasses hanging from his shirt.

Chris needed his phone taken away

The football celebrations had also affected Chris’s judgement on social media.

At around 12.30am he had WhatsApped Pete Tong with “it’s coming home”.

Pete replied.

That somehow made Chris feel worse.

Scott decided they needed a system where high-risk celebrity phone numbers were removed from Chris’s own contacts before nights out and stored with somebody more responsible.

Chris could then be prevented from obtaining them once the messages started.

Emily played the Graduation Game

The planned graduation feature arrived with Sheffield student Emily and her best friend Hebe.

Emily was about to graduate after three years and had supplied embarrassing stories which Hebe had to identify from multiple-choice options.

The subjects covered accommodation, nights out and health.

In the nights-out round, the real story was that Emily had left a good friend crying in a toilet cubicle because she wanted to continue to an after-party.

Hebe correctly guessed it.

The final round involved the moon boot Emily had worn after breaking her foot on a trip to Prague.

One possible answer involved turning the boot into a cocktail container.

Another involved revealing it in bed.

The actual story was that Emily had taken the moon boot off in the middle of a busy dance floor, swung it around her head, fallen over and hurt the foot again.

Hebe got that one right too.

Scott thought three correct answers was proof they knew each other extremely well, although some of the new information might have tested the friendship before graduation.

Jade had her baby during the show

The programme also returned to Jade, who had called the previous day while preparing to be induced.

She had given birth.

Her daughter Emma arrived at 1.32pm and weighed seven pounds four ounces.

That meant the baby had been born during Scott and Chris’s actual broadcast.

After all their joking about people doing major life events while Radio 1 happened to be on in the background, they now had a particularly good example.
