3 July 2018: A One Direction tribute act seemed to think it actually was One Direction

England had stopped working

England were due to play Colombia in the World Cup and Scott thought the country had effectively given up on normal productivity.

The atmosphere reminded him of the period between Christmas and New Year, with people reorganising classes, buying food for barbecues and treating the match as the only event which mattered.

A Newsbeat contributor had predicted that the game might go to “pens”, a phrase Scott and Chris immediately began repeating.

Chris’s own barbecue plans ran into a practical problem.

The supermarket had been hit so hard by people preparing for football gatherings that some of the meat shelves were virtually empty.

Listeners offered alternatives, including the Australian idea of everyone bringing their own food for the barbecue rather than expecting the host to provide everything.

Only One Direction took tribute work extremely seriously

Scott had found a One Direction tribute act called Only One Direction and initially thought going to see them might be a good night out.

Then he watched footage of the act performing.

The tribute performers did not simply sing the songs.

On stage, they were introduced using the real band members’ names.

The audience was asked to cheer for Liam, Louis, Niall and Zayn.

Scott became fascinated when the performers then introduced One Direction songs as though they genuinely belonged to them, including referring to tracks as songs from “our” albums.

That raised a question he could not stop asking.

Where did the tribute end?

If the real One Direction had split up, should the tribute act also have split up?

When they left the stage, did they continue being the members of One Direction?

Graduation confessions were being prepared

With students finishing university, the programme began planning a graduation version of one of its confession games.

The idea was to get people to reveal the secrets they had managed to keep from friends and housemates during their degree.

Scott remembered his own long-running confession about once claiming in a job interview that he had got with one of the Sugababes.

It had never happened.

For years the lie remained part of the story he had told the bar where he wanted to work.

Radio eventually exposed it.

Now graduates were being invited to do the same thing deliberately before leaving university.

Jade packed Radio 1 for labour

Listener Jade was due to give birth and had been told she would be induced the following day.

Alongside the obvious hospital bag, she made sure she had the BBC iPlayer Radio app ready on her phone.

Scott was delighted that Radio 1 appeared so high on the preparation list.

Jade said she expected to be in hospital for a long time and wanted something good to listen to.

They joked about naming the baby after whichever Radio 1 presenter happened to be on air when she arrived.

The following day, the show would discover she had actually given birth during Scott and Chris’s programme.
