The whole country was talking about the final
The *Love Island* final had aired.
Scott knew that anybody who had not seen it faced an almost impossible day of avoiding spoilers.
He promised ordinary listeners that he would not ruin anything.
One particular listener, however, was about to be deliberately tortured.
A BBC weather interview suddenly stopped
Earlier in the day, the Radio 1 office had been watching BBC News when Met Office scientist Mark McCarthy appeared in an interview about the changing climate.
Mid-answer, he suddenly apologised and appeared to collapse or lower himself out of shot.
Scott found the clip genuinely worrying rather than funny.
The Met Office later confirmed Mark was okay and would not be working for the rest of the day.
Scott said becoming ill live on radio or television was one of his worst professional fears.
The polite “sorry, excuse me” immediately before Mark disappeared from view made the moment even more striking.
Jack Fowler caused chaos next door
Former *Love Island* contestant Jack Fowler was in the room next to Scott’s studio.
One member of the production team, Sophie, became so excited that Scott could physically feel how fast her pulse was going in her neck.
She was sent out to say hello.
The sighting also prompted more attempts at the show’s favourite *Love Island* phrase: “Yas, queen”.
Scott judged who could and could not deliver it properly.
Most people were failing.
Hayley had successfully avoided the result
Hayley had watched the entire series but could not watch the final live.
She had avoided social media and conversations all day because she wanted to watch the episode later without knowing what happened.
Scott turned that into the Love Island Final Game.
He asked questions about events from the series.
If Hayley answered correctly, nothing happened.
If she got one wrong, Scott would give her a spoiler from the final.
At least, that was what she believed.
Laura was “actually Isabel from Croydon”
The first wrong answer earned Hayley a completely invented revelation.
Scott told her that Laura had admitted she had been pretending to be Scottish for the entire series in order to secure the Scottish vote.
Her real name was supposedly Isabel and she was an actress from Croydon.
Hayley sounded stunned.
Another incorrect answer produced the claim that dumped contestants had been allowed back into the villa to decide which couple would finish third.
Then came the biggest fake spoiler.
Scott told her Jack had discovered Dani had kissed Adam in an early episode, dumped her moments before the result and stormed off the set.
Hayley believed enough of it to become genuinely distressed about what she was going to watch.
Then Scott confessed.
Every spoiler had been invented.
She still had no idea who won.
The relief was enormous.
Some listeners had tuned in halfway through and thought Scott had actually spoiled the final, forcing him to explain again that none of the dramatic claims were true.
People who moved onto the sofa and never left
The show also started gathering stories about friends or relatives who asked to stay temporarily and then somehow became permanent residents of the sofa.
Scott admitted he had experienced the problem himself and hated the confrontation required to ask somebody when they were finally leaving.
It was set up as a subject for later in the week.
After spending the afternoon lying elaborately to a *Love Island* fan, telling somebody “you need to move out now” should theoretically have been easy.
Scott was not convinced.
