Chris finally told Radio 1
The mystery around the suit shopping earlier in the week was resolved.
Chris had been engaged for some time, but he and his girlfriend had kept the actual wedding plans largely private.
With the Royal Wedding dominating the week, Chris decided it was finally time to tell listeners that his own wedding was approaching too.
He admitted he felt nervous making a personal announcement on air.
Radio 1 had been part of his life for years, and listeners had followed him from the days when he travelled enormous distances and sometimes stayed in hostels simply to make it to the show.
That was why he wanted them involved in this part as well.
“Someone’s actually agreed to marry me,” he said.
Scott immediately pointed out that Chris had been in a long relationship already, so the phrase “off the market” made little practical difference, but the announcement still felt like a milestone.
Scott was not the best man
The suit shopping had been for the wedding.
Scott had helped Chris choose clothes and had been sending photographs to Chris’s girlfriend for approval throughout the process.
Then came the important question.
Was Scott the best man?
No.
He was an usher.
Scott initially sounded slightly offended until Chris upgraded the description to an usher “with principal duties”.
That still did not mean Scott was volunteering for every traditional usher task.
He made it clear that he did not plan to spend the day moving chairs around or handing out orders of service.
He was also relieved to discover he was not required to give the best-man speech.
The stag do was already being planned, with Scott heavily involved and the location being kept secret. Chris briefly entertained the idea of allowing the entire Radio 1 audience to join in before Scott sensibly moved the conversation away from turning it into a public festival.
Maya heard the next Yanny and Laurel
Maya Jama joined the Breakfast Show and was introduced to another auditory illusion following the week’s Yanny/Laurel argument.
This time the same sound could apparently become “brainstorm” or “green needle” depending on which phrase the listener expected to hear.
Maya demonstrated the effect by hearing the word she had just been primed to expect.
Scott was delighted that the internet had produced a second piece of audio capable of making people distrust their own ears within the same week.
Sam risked everything for Zoe
The Biggest Weekend competition then delivered one of its more stressful calls.
Sam wanted tickets for himself and his girlfriend Zoe.
He correctly identified the first short music clip and secured the weekend.
That should have been enough.
Instead he was offered the chance to risk the tickets for an upgrade: the whole weekend plus a meeting with Jason Derulo, one of Zoe’s favourite artists.
Zoe did not even know Sam was doing it.
He gambled.
The second clip was harder, and Scott, Chris and Maya sounded almost as nervous as Sam while waiting for the answer.
He got it right.
Sam and Zoe won the weekend and the chance to meet Jason Derulo.
Chris had started the morning by sharing the biggest relationship news of his life.
Sam ended it by potentially creating the greatest boyfriend points haul of his.
