Scott had already had a long day before Radio 1
Scott had been up early for *Good Morning Britain*, where he appeared around 6.50am and expected to return for a larger segment at 7.50am.
The later appearance never happened because Piers Morgan was talking and the programme ran out of time.
Scott then had the BBC Radio and Music Awards that evening and managed another small mistake before he had even got there: an email intended for somebody called Winnie addressed them as “Willie”.
That conversation about technology going wrong gave Chris the perfect excuse to bring back an old friend of the show.
Fernando was definitely not Chris Stark
Fernando returned to the studio after a long absence and immediately praised Chris, saying that if anybody on the station deserved a pay rise it was him.
Listeners had long suspected Fernando was simply Chris doing a voice. To settle the matter, Scott asked both men to speak at exactly the same time.
They simultaneously declared: “I’m a massive fan of the dictionary.”
Scott treated that as definitive proof that two different people were present, although listener messages continued insisting that Fernando sounded suspiciously like Chris.
A Lionel Messi clip caused trouble downstairs
Fernando’s actual reason for appearing was a WhatsApp video sent by a friend.
He was upstairs while his girlfriend was downstairs. The clip appeared to show Lionel Messi scoring a brilliant goal, so Fernando turned the volume up because he could not hear much.
Then the video abruptly cut from football to explicit material, one of the deliberately misleading clips people sent to friends as a joke.
That would have been awkward enough, except Fernando had forgotten his phone was connected to the Bluetooth speaker in the kitchen.
The very loud inappropriate audio therefore came from downstairs, right next to his girlfriend, while Fernando was upstairs holding the phone.
He insisted the whole thing was an innocent mistake. Chris strongly defended Fernando’s character, which did little to reduce the audience’s suspicion that they might somehow be the same man.
Stefan Powell gave Tune of the Week a Welsh upgrade
Scott’s enthusiasm for Welsh accents led to BBC Newsbeat’s Stefan Powell recording his own version of Alice Merton’s “No Roots”.
The attraction was Stefan’s rolled Rs, so the chorus became an increasingly elaborate sequence of “I’ve got no roots” with extra emphasis on exactly the sound Scott wanted.
Scott admitted the programme had become generally quite weird lately. Chris thought that was a positive development.
Lewis gave the show a full weekly review
Listener Lewis had done something unusual: he had listened to almost the whole previous week’s podcasts back-to-back on a train.
That allowed him to review the programme as a complete run rather than judging individual bits.
He highlighted Calum Scott’s big shop, Mark’s uncomfortable “upstairs talk”, Meghan Trainor’s visit and the behind-the-scenes prank as evidence that the week had gone wrong in a particularly enjoyable way.
His verdict was that the show should be even weirder.
Scott liked the idea of having somebody effectively carry out customer-service feedback on Radio 1 and invited listeners to tell him how the programme could improve.
