Big Shaq returned to Radio 1
Big Shaq, Michael Dapaah’s hugely successful comedy character, joined Scott and Chris after “Man’s Not Hot” had become one of the biggest novelty hits of the year.
Rather than conduct a conventional interview, they fired topics at him and asked for immediate Big Shaq reactions.
The subjects included I’m a Celebrity, Blue Planet and DJ Khaled.
The character’s particular way of processing ordinary television and celebrity culture produced exactly the kind of answers Scott and Chris had hoped for.
The show hired a nan
Then came the main event.
If Big Shaq could insist that “man’s not hot”, Scott and Chris wanted to know whether the same applied to a grandmother.
The programme therefore hired a nan and persuaded Big Shaq to create a new version of the track.
“Man’s Not Hot” became “Nan’s Not Hot”.
The deliberately unnecessary production involved the rented grandmother joining Big Shaq for a performance built entirely around one extremely simple joke.
It worked well enough to become the headline moment of the day.
Bumbley Wednesday continued
It was also another Bumbley Wednesday, the midweek collection of callers, odd observations and conversations that did not necessarily need a conventional reason to be on the radio.
