Radio 1 roll call
Scott and Chris completed their run of Breakfast cover with a live Bank Holiday programme. Chris had imposed an 11.30pm limit on his Sunday night, while social media suggested Greg James had gone from DJing at Newmarket Racecourse to waking up in Ibiza.
That prompted an attempt to account for the station’s presenters. Adele Roberts was safely on air, Matt Edmondson was presumed to be at home with his dog and a soufflé, and Grimmy was expected back the following morning. Dev remained the person they thought most likely to be asleep in an airport.
Chris also discovered that the coffee he had been drinking for 20 minutes was only hot water. He had failed to remove the foil separating it from the coffee underneath, but treated the mistake as a chance to enjoy a second, properly prepared cup.
The Breakfast highlights
Listeners chose moments to hear again from the preceding two weeks. Cardiff Metropolitan University’s exceptionally long game of Library Tennis returned, complete with its escalating grunts and slow-motion highlights. Scott and Chris also revisited calling Avicii, Chris singing in the BBC basement showers and Bear Grylls being surprised by a man in a bear costume.
The replays gave the Bank Holiday show the feel of a final lap before both presenters returned to afternoons. Several listeners were hearing the games for the first time, while others were already asking for Library Tennis to become a regular feature.
Five plums and two Bangers
Ali Plumb recommended Captain America: Civil War, awarding it his maximum five plums and arguing that it remained enjoyable even for viewers who had not followed every earlier Marvel film. He also tested Scott and Chris on the unexpectedly high numbers reached by franchises including Fast & Furious, Transformers and Pirates of the Caribbean.
For Battle of the Bangers, Scott offered Kelly Clarkson’s “Since U Been Gone” against Chris’s choice of Chase & Status and “Let You Go”. Listener Francesca chose Kelly, giving the final Bank Holiday morning a large singalong before Grimmy’s return.
