29 November 2022: Whitney and Cher are rejected for Julio Iglesias

The Birthday Game: Caroline

Caroline from Bath turned 48 and planned to have steak with her husband, son, daughter-in-law and grandson.

She was also visiting Bath Christmas Market and hoped to have some mulled wine.

Caroline played golf at Saltford and described herself as extremely competitive.

Her opening spin was Whitney Houston’s I Will Always Love You, number one in 1992.

Although she called it beautiful, she wanted something more upbeat and rejected it.

The second spin produced Cher’s Believe.

Caroline said it was one of the Cher songs she did not particularly like and gambled again.

Her compulsory final selection was Julio Iglesias’s Begin the Beguine, number one in 1981.

“Well, I guess this is it then,” she said.

The result became a perfect demonstration of the game’s risk. Scott reminded listeners that Caroline had discarded two enormous pop records and had no choice but to play Julio.

Some listeners nevertheless defended the final song and said it reminded them of holidays in Mallorca.

Christmas television

Scott compared the newly announced festive schedules with BBC One’s Christmas Eve line-up from 1992.

The older schedule included Paul Daniels, Keeping Up Appearances and Casualty, prompting discussion about which Christmas television moments people still remembered.

Football language

Ahead of Wales playing England at the World Cup, Scott admitted that football phrases continued to confuse him.

He asked what it meant to play “with the handbrake off” and relied on Zoe Ball to simplify the qualification permutations.

Handover

Scott handed over while preparing to decorate his entrance before the festive trail deadline.
