A Radio 1 Movie wish turns into a real engagement
Scott heard from Hannah, one of the people seen blowing out birthday candles in the Radio 1 Movie. Her on-screen wish had been for her boyfriend to propose, and she had called with the rather remarkable news that he had since taken her to Germany and proposed on a mountain.
The team were genuinely delighted that the film had acquired its first apparent miracle. Scott immediately began imagining a sequel built around the wedding, while Beccy wondered whether the other wishes in the film might also be fulfilled, including a boy’s hope for a dog and another listener’s wish for a lifetime supply of chocolate.
That prompted a practical discussion about what a ‘lifetime supply’ really meant. Beccy recalled a friend winning a lifetime’s coffee, only to discover that the prize worked out as a limited number of packets rather than an endless flow. Scott and Chris agreed that the small print was likely to be a disappointment for anyone with ambitious snack habits.
The programme also looked back at some of the show’s biggest guests from 2011. Nicki Minaj’s enthusiastic reaction to her improvised theme tune, Billie Piper’s very limited GCSE revision advice, One Direction callers freezing when asked for a question, Robbie Savage and Snoop Dogg all featured in the round-up.
The mixture made the Radio 1 Movie update feel like a miniature end-of-year show. Hannah’s news gave the team a happy new story to add to the archive, even if Scott’s immediate instinct was to turn a real engagement into another entirely unnecessary film project.
