Scott plans the least useful Radio 1 Movie DVD commentary
With the Radio 1 Movie now online, listeners began asking whether Scott would make a DVD-style commentary track. Scott was sceptical, saying he had never knowingly watched one, while Beccy argued that the bonus features were always there even if nobody actually used them.
They found the exception in Arnold Schwarzenegger’s commentary on Total Recall. Rather than offering much about the filmmaking, Arnie mostly narrated the action in front of him, identifying himself in fight scenes and explaining that a rat was running around with a tracking device.
Scott and Beccy found the lack of insight irresistible. They treated it as a model for their own commentary, replaying parts of the Radio 1 Movie and announcing obvious images such as Jessie J performing, dogs with their heads out of car windows and a man dancing in his bedroom.
The imagined extra became even less informative as it went on. Scott particularly liked the dog-and-Jessie J sequence he had requested for the finished film, while Beccy kept pointing out that their commentary was doing exactly what had made Schwarzenegger’s so funny: adding nothing to what was already on screen.
The item ended with listeners supplying the plot of Total Recall in a few words, saving anyone who had not seen it from two hours of confusion. Scott’s proposed Radio 1 Movie commentary had the same accidental appeal, a bonus feature whose chief selling point was that it would be completely unnecessary.
