Scott arrived in a smarter-than-usual outfit for his Breakfast Show cover, though the attempt at polish was undermined by him using Sellotape to remove fluff from his jacket during a work meeting. He also told Beccy that a tight pair of trousers had led to Janet Street-Porter seeing rather more of him than intended when he bent down to tie a shoelace in a restaurant.
The programme found an unlikely cause to champion when a competition invited listeners to update Nokia’s famous ringtone. Scott played several earnest alternatives, then backed the wildly unsuitable “trololo” version as the one that should be heard on phones around the world. Beccy was not entirely persuaded, but the team wanted listeners to vote it through.
The larger story was the aftermath of Scott’s supposed call to Harry Styles. The previous day, he had played a number on air after pretending to ring “Diana Vickers off One Direction”, repeatedly saying it was not Harry’s number and telling people not to call. Naturally, listeners called anyway, and the number, Harry and Scott all began trending worldwide.
Scott then revealed the twist. The number belonged to a small PAYG phone he had bought the afternoon before, solely to see what messages fans would leave if they believed they had Harry’s direct line. The device had collected hundreds of texts and voicemails, ranging from breathless screaming to calculated attempts to sound relaxed enough for Harry to call back.
He played several messages, including one fan who could only scream, another who announced that Harry was her favourite “number of One Direction”, and a listener who tried the familiar trick of pretending Harry had promised to return her purse. The reveal did not stop the fantasy entirely, because Scott ended the feature by putting the excitable Martha through to the real Harry Styles, who joined from Amsterdam Airport and took her shrieks in good humour.
