Chris waits for a surprise birthday party
Chris returned from his birthday weekend still wondering how long a person was allowed to wait for a surprise party. Scott thought a week was the absolute limit, but Chris’s old 18th-birthday story suggested he had been waiting much longer.
He had travelled home expecting all his friends to be concealing a celebration, only to arrive at the pub and find his friend Ollie Butler sitting there alone. Chris still initially treated Ollie as a decoy, before accepting that it was simply the two of them for the evening.
The discussion moved to dogs after Beccy had watched Crufts. Scott and Chris tried to decide what sort of dog matched Chris’s personality, with the answer becoming an excuse for Chris to reveal how little he knew about breeds.
Scott also resumed the search for jobs Chris could perform for money. One online offer involved acting as an alibi for five pounds, an idea the team correctly treated as a bad and risky use of a modest fee.
It was a programme built from affectionate disappointment: the missing birthday party, Chris’s uncertain job prospects and the question of what dog he might be. Scott made sure that every answer reflected badly, but harmlessly, on Chris.
