Chris gets a Home and Away bus singalong going
Scott and Chris tested a television-style sketch in real life by boarding a London bus and starting the Home and Away theme tune. Their hope was that fellow passengers would recognise it and enthusiastically join in. Instead, the pair sang alone, then had to sit through the rest of the journey in the kind of silence that made the experiment much funnier than a successful one would have been.
They refused to accept defeat. A second bus attempt was recorded, and Scott invited listeners elsewhere in the country to prove that their passengers would be friendlier than London’s. Kirsty, travelling back towards Exeter, took up the challenge on a bus with five or six people aboard. Her bold performance got the group singing, including Scott’s highly specific encouragement to “sing, man in the yellow hoodie”.
The programme also received the first physical prize for its fictional Danny Howard Points scheme. Listener Eddie had posted in a GCSE woodwork spice rack he no longer needed, complete with “spice rack” written on the side in marker pen. Scott treated it as the start of an ambitious merchandise operation and asked whether Eddie, now working full time, could make roughly 10,000 more for future winners.
Eddie was understandably less keen on the production target. He explained that the rack had been his GCSE final project, had been kept in the garage after he moved out, and was not perfect, with visible glue marks. Beccy promptly got a splinter while handling it for photographs, while Scott praised it as far better than anything he had ever completed in woodwork and continued to suggest that Eddie could spend his evenings and weekends making the remaining stock.
Beccy then unveiled her prediction of Born This Way. Where Scott had gone all folk-rock, Beccy built a much more recognisably Gaga-style pop track from the published words. Scott was genuinely impressed, listeners asked for it as a ringtone and the team briefly discussed whether they could release it before Gaga’s real version, provided nobody told her record label.
