Scott’s imagined version of Lady Gaga’s Born This Way
With Lady Gaga about to premiere Born This Way at the Grammys, Scott set the team some unusually speculative homework. Gaga had put the words online, but the tune was still under wraps, so Scott, Beccy and the rest of the programme each had to write the song they thought they were about to hear. Scott went first, confidently presenting his version as the logical next step after Just Dance, Poker Face, Paparazzi, Telephone and Bad Romance.
It was not quite the direction listeners expected. Scott’s Born This Way was a rousing, country-leaning acoustic number, complete with office-worker Fiona on backing vocals. Beccy immediately wondered whether he genuinely expected Gaga to abandon her established sound for country and western. Scott stuck to his position that the new project could represent a change of direction, even as listeners compared it to Mumford & Sons and Bruce Springsteen.
The joke worked because the record had not yet been heard. Scott had managed to make a version of a song that existed only as lyrics, prompting one listener to point out that he had somehow “ruined a song” before anybody in the world had heard it. Beccy promised a much more Gaga-like interpretation for the following day, and Scott was delighted enough with the reaction to start imagining Gaga reworking his country version herself.
Away from the musical experiment, Scott was trying to decide whether to continue R. Kelly’s sprawling Trapped in the Closet after 6pm. He felt the story was becoming too complicated even for the show’s recap diagrams, but messages from listeners made clear that it had become part of their evening routine. Scott also began looking for a UK karaoke venue brave enough to hold all 22 parts, with Beccy already choosing which characters she might play.
There was an accidental new catchphrase when Scott called Pete Tong “Pete Dong” while introducing a record. The text messages immediately ran with it, and the mistake followed him into a story about running into Olly Murs in the gym changing rooms. Scott had found himself fully dressed again while Murs was still wandering about with only a towel, a situation Beccy pressed him to describe in far more detail than he wanted.
