14 August 2007: Louis Walsh on X Factor Drama, Judges and Pop Stars

Louis Walsh drops by to discuss his shock sacking from and swift reinstatement as a judge on The X Factor, reveals details about the new series and line-up, and delivers his blunt opinions on current pop stars from Britney Spears to Amy Winehouse.

Louis Walsh visits the studio fresh from the X Factor audition circuit to discuss the events that led to his temporary departure from the judging panel. He insists his sacking wasn’t a publicity stunt, explaining that he was genuinely upset at the time, though people understandably questioned whether it was staged. He reveals that replacement judge Brian (a choreographer from Grease) approached Simon during the London auditions saying he didn’t want to continue, which led to Louis being asked back. Walsh is cagey about which category he’s judging this year but confirms all auditions are wrapped and the series will feature four categories: groups, over-25s, young males, and young females. He praises new judge Dannii Minogue, though finds her Australian accent slightly irritating, and notes that Simon is tougher on the other judges than on her.

On current music, Louis is refreshingly honest. He loves Justin Timberlake and thinks Robyn is fantastic, but takes swipes at Gareth Gates for wanting to be JT when he was “just a pop singer,” and dismisses Britney Spears as beyond help (“no hair, no voice, no career”). He’s more optimistic about Amy Winehouse, calling her “absolutely a real star,” and discusses possible boy band reunions including Take That and Westlife. The episode includes the regular Honesty Games feature, where listeners ring in with personal questions, and various chat about celebrity culture, including Star Stories’ parody of Simon Cowell.
