I swear some geek listeners would be very happy with a bland, boring show as along as they got the newsbeat timing right lol

There are just some bits of amateurish broadcasting that overshadow other qualities. But really are the anthems shows anything other than bland at best?! Not the presenters' fault but they're not exactly a great listen IMO

Evanna figured it out! Arguably the buck should stop with the producers here, despite the anthems shows being simple to produce they have done a bad job at coaching their presenters technically (not just news intros!)

  2. I know I go on about it but the Newsbeat thing just makes the station sound amateurish. Even when they hit the the timings they don't even talk more than 2 seconds into the ramp and often mess up the fade-up of the newsbeat studio. Surprised Aled hasn't addressed this!

On the subject of Newsbeat, I've never heard of today's newsreader before, either reading the news or as a reporter on the main programme?

me neither, he's okay but sounds very young!

Has there been any genuine request show, on any station, since Annie Nightingale? - i.e., one where the listener's "choice" doesn't already have to be on an approved list ??

I guess the 10 min takeover is as close as you get, as that just has to be in the playout system. Still not the same though, I agree!

His shows on radio x are better I think as he is totally different now to how he was in radio 1 days he sees, to have toned down his act a fair bit which is why the stick he’s getting to iac is wrong I think although he is 48 now

Completely disagree here. His Radio 1 afternoon / breakfast period was exceptional, and while he remains a fine broadcaster, the shows are nowhere near the same quality. As you say, he's toned things down a fair bit, which is inevitable but less engaging as a result.

  5. Oops how could I miss Dave off the list from Moyles at R1! I get your point about the credits but really the labels are just how they are positioned. No doubt Dave at R1, and Dom at RX, contribute significantly more than the additional presenters will at Capital. Same with Scott and Chris at R1, it was always Scott's name above the door (as they used to say!), though Chris was never co-presenting in terms of announcing songs.

I am not a Capital listener so how does it work so far - do the 3 of them contribute to all parts, including announcing songs like RMC on R1? Or is it really the main presenter plus two adding bits here and there?

Moyles has 4 people on air him Dom pippa and James seems to work well

True but he also talks an awful lot so there is time for those 3 to contribute fully! Same as the old R1 Moyles show with Dom, Tina and Aled. Then again I'm sure Global have a plan for how it will work...

I personally think he'll end up on drive or breakfast. The only thing I can see stopping the latter is that I don't see Zoë Ball giving up on breakfast just yet (without them offering her another high profile slot, even then I can't see it happening yet), and history repeating itself with Sara Cox taking over, who was the favourite to replace Chris Evans last time.

As for Ken, unless Helen Thomas really wanted to be really bold, I really cannot see the urgency to replace him yet. The station has already changed massively over the past 3 years both in presenter line up, and change in music policy. I also question the urgency of replacing Steve Wright now to be fair. When the time comes, hopefully it's Ken's decision. As for potential successors, it'll be someone established at R2 familiar with the listeners.

OJ Borg would be a good shout, he's been on overnights for a few years now, so hopefully he progresses to daytimes at some point. That show would then be a good candidate for the show outside of London as well as he's based in Salford. Vernon Kay would also be a good shout, although it's be a good idea for him to starting to build up some more prominent daytime cover more frequently (he has done some breakfast and afternoon cover) but hasn't so much lately for whatever reason. I imagine depending on any other changes in the future, Sara Cox and Zoë Ball would also be likely names to be thrown into the hat.

Agree about Scott getting R2 drive or breakfast, feels inevitable! Could end up with a stint on both...

I'd be surprised to see OJ promoted, he's a 'safe pair of hands' for overnights, maybe earlies and for cover but nothing more IMO. I'd expect to see Vine's eventual replacement being the 'outside London' show. Vernon would fit well but depends if he wants the commitment given his other media work.

Clara Amfo just doesn’t work on future sounds sometimes I feel she doesn’t have the conviction the confidence and the authority of the tone when you are on the mic in ways that specialist broadcasters of the show like Annie Macmanus and Zane Lowe even Huw when covered. Love to hear ones passion the full force behind the songs playing when do specialist programme.

Future Soul firm favourite of what I like on Sounds. Hard slot to do for Danny’ think he probably does alright but not one bothered to choose to listen to.

Power down playlist nightly from 10PM needs to be axed and scrapped. Dean never gelled and at point would tune into the station less.

Agree completely about Clara - she just isn't the 'musical authority'  to hold that show for me, but I don't see anything changing soon there as I have a hunch Jack (the only other current potential successor) will bypass that show and end up on Daytime somewhere.

I'm very much hoping that 'Dean and Vicky' is a significantly better show than Dean has managed. To be fair, he has gotten better, he seemed quite out of his depth in the beginning but I haven't warmed to him particularly. He was quite good covering for Scott & Chris once (with Katie?), so depending on the new duo dynamic it could be ok.

  9. Sounds to me like there is a subtle change in the timings, they seem to be hitting the ramp in at xx:xx:50 today on the new beds, though the 'vocal' is slightly longer so they still have the same 8 seconds to speak. Funny how Arielle crashed it slightly on the first ever outing for the new stuff!

With them wanting to move a daytime R2 show out of London, I could see OJ Borg getting a promotion from overnights, of course... He broadcasts from Salford already. I'd say he's one to watch for either Ken or Steve Wright's show. I can definitely see a scenario where Zoë leaves entirely and Scott gets drive. I think it's almost a guarantee that Sara Cox will make it to the breakfast slot eventually.

Agree about the Salford part, but suspect as @Ash101 says it would be someone like Tina Daheley or Victoria Derbyshire taking the show from there. Doubt OJ will make it to a prime weekday slot.

Suspect Mills is waiting for Bruce or Wright

Curveball... Sara moves and he gets R2 drive? whatever happens he is waiting for that almost certianly... I get the impression he is being lined up for Bruce's slot, although "The dep never gets the gig" so.... maybe the Wright slot is the one they are poiting him towards in which case the chart would need a new host (katie?)

If he got the 0930 - 1200 slot then he cold keep the chart still

R1, V&J will for sure be breakfast, no questions

Matt and Mollie will never get to weekdays now too late, they will be the consistent anchor of weekends around all the new names

RMC on Drive I can see if v&J go to Breakast, Arielle the Live Lounge show new early breakfast presenter with Dean or Katie in 1-330 weekdays

What will be interesting is what happens with Dance Anthems over Charlie's upcoming maternity leave - It's obvs that Rickie and Melvin will run 1030 - 1 as a duo (although could get someone like Katie to be a 3rd and cover Charlie??) same as when Mollie is off, Matt Solo altough wonder if Scarlett Moffatt will cover her? as they can have 9 months off can't they?

Dance Anthems Maternity cover - Arielle is Obvs but the does alot of gigging Saturday's unless they have kind of "booked" her already, regardless if she is doing months cover then she will have to take some weekends off as well

Danny is too big now to be there on a Saturday afternoon, although imagine him, Sarah and Ariele sharing it? other clear choice is Sarah or Jack Saunders

Scott is into double shifting alot these days - so would he be down for it for 9 months? Do 5L then dance anthems... stranger things have happened? he covered it when Danny was on it a few times.. Could this be when Scott comes off of weekdays and covering Charlie's Mat leave bridges the gap between R1 and R2 ?

Of course after that Charlie could do what Sara did when Scott "covered" drive and not want to come back to Saturday afternoons, bearing in mind she'll have a baby (although I can see her having the baby at work and have he/she raving in their push chair with daddy lol)

I think it's unlikely Scott would keep the chart at R1 once he is fully on R2 daytimes. I also doubt he'll end up on mornings unless they are happy to have a different sort of show in that slot, I do think there is merit in the idea of drive though, could be a big shake-up with Zoe leaving, Sara to breakfast, Scott to drive and eventually a female presented on lunchtimes to keep the gender balance...

You're right people can have a long time off on maternity but somehow doubt either of the ladies in question here will take that full extended break. Never know I suppose how someone will feel as a new mum though.

Interesting that the timing of the chart has changed... So it's 15 minutes shorter than it'd usually be.. rather than 15 minutes longer (because no Newsbeat)

Makes sense though as there will probably be loads of Christmas songs in the chart so having less time to fill will help!

  13. Completely agree with you @BBCAaron . Feel like a mistake to assume that moving out of London will somehow fix anything and I think it will create more problems than it solves. I get the political pressure but think that's the wrong answer.
