I think Jamie is really starting to settle into the role well. He comes across as really warm, and genuinely invested in the listeners when he’s talking to them which is nice. I think he’s building a really great relationship with Vicki and Katie too.

His recent great company podcast is great too, where he has quite a deep chat with someone new each week. He’s clearly a very genuine person and I think he has some real potential.

Agree with this. The anti-Jamie feeling was IMO quite influenced by the negativity around him replacing Jordan, since Jordan was exceptional and also universally loved. When people mention Danny and Jamie in the same sentence about bad hiring decisions I almost choke - Jamie may not be perfect but he's several leagues better than Danny already and has bags of potential. Danny is poor and has shown zero potential...

Someone on here said recently weekend afternoons have a big audience. I think you'd want some of your biggest talent here. Which is why there was talk of a reshuffle. I couldn't personally see Danny in this slot if they decided to keep him.

    I hope you're right!

I remember some years ago hearing that the biggest show at a weekend was mid-mornings, but not sure if that's changed with the changing pattern of radio listening in general. Given the best show at the weekend (by a distance) is M&M, would make sense that's now the biggest slot.

There is a reason you don't know who is doing weekend afternoons yet. The plan is still to see how Danny Beard's trial goes on weekend mornings. Newspaper clippings have demonstrated Aled has been keen to push Danny Beard at the weekend and to give him a fair hearing. The plan looks to be to wait and see whether he improves in the next few weeks. The bosses still want more LBGTQ+ representation on the station.

If Aled decides to give Danny a full time role, even as part of a duo / trio, it'll be the most disappointing decision of his tenure. The fact Danny is still on air and hasn't been quietly moved on 'due to a change in plan' is bad enough!

A few weeks in and I am actually loving the show and Jordan is a nice mix of his old chaotic self and dare I say it a slick jock.

I think we've all figured out now how much you like it @AndyK77 😂 Personally while I think it's by far the best show on the Capital schedule and better than its predecessor, it still has the shortened songs and other commercial-radio aspects that remind me why I'm a Radio 1 fan. No matter how well this has worked out for Jordan, and all credit to him for landing the job, I can't help but feel that a Jordan and Katie show on R1 breakfast would have been so much better!

  5. I don't feel there's so much overlap between M&M and Scott's shows. M&M is of a similar calibre to Scott & Chris on R1, with genuine laugh out loud moments and usually a show packed full of real interesting content. Scott's R2 show is IMO a shadow of the stuff he did on R1 (not his fault, he's doing exactly what station management want), with music and content to appeal to a much older audience.

  6. I think there's been a major cost-saving on specialist presenters - fewer of them, significantly less live output, and generally less 'big' names. Makes sense, given the budget pressures, but the comparison between this advert and today's presenters makes that really clear.

  7. I must admit a broad smile to myself when I got in the car just after 1pm today and realised I'd timed it perfectly to avoid Danny! Just listened back to that earlier link, just horrific and what's worse is that Danny doesn't seem to have improved even vaguely since the first show. As Greg20 said, the show is being driven by a producer which makes the mess even less excusable.

The irony of Jordan moving to Capital Radio is it seems to speed up Greg's eventual move from Radio 1 Breakfast.

I think Greg's show is great, but he hasn't had any significant competition in his time on mornings.

Now there is there'll be more scrutiny of the figures, he might be more tempted to move, which is probably what Jordan wanted before he left!

Right, despite what Jordan may say now, I think he (and probably Chris) would rather be doing R1 breakfast but seems he was told that wasn't at all imminent so made the understandable move to go elsewhere. Doubt Greg will move off breakfast anytime soon as he's got a new contract and anyway no obvious replacement in line... They certainly have thrown some energy behind competing these last couple of weeks though.

The BBC trying to compete with the commercial sector by reducing its News output seems to be wrong on many levels

One of the latest bad decisions Aled seems to be making recently

As per the exact same discussion on the DS forums... This decision makes sense as a limited change to counter the new Capital breakfast show, and aside from the poorly-judged risk he took with Danny his tenure as head of R1 has been good.

  10. I ended up listening to quite a bit of Danny's show this morning on a long drive. I am trying to think of a positive but I can't... Seemed quite obvious to me that the show is being tech op'ed by a producer, not least the way the news jingle started playing and Danny seemed surprised, and in a way the fact that all Danny needs to do is speak at the right time makes it even less forgivable. Some quite basic errors at various points throughout which would be understandable from a novice on their first show, but really was poor (including messing up the WhatsApp number again).

I have no idea what Aled was thinking, it could be a bit more understandable if there were a couple of great features, but it's the most basic 'text in with comments on xyz' show. Can't quite decide whether Danny surpasses Maya as 'worst daytime DJ in R1 history'. Not sure I will listen any more though to help me decide.

  11. At risk of this being a massive 'Whoooooo?' for most people on here, mine was Bruno Brookes on the Top 40 in the late 80s. It was my first real experience of radio and he made the show incredibly exciting. This led me to seek out other shows on the station and I've been a listener ever since.

I really like Danny! Find him funny and good taste in music ❤️

Fair enough if you find Danny funny, but the music on the show isn't at all chosen by the presenter and would be the same whomever covered the slot.

I think had Danny been booked as a one off or co-host for only a weekends worth of shows it would’ve been fine. I can see how Aled would want to book them to show commitment to supporting queer and non-binary talent from the queer community and culture scene. But over the years of take-overs there are many good talented LGBTQ+ in the radio industry.

Just want to politely remind that their pronouns are they/them.

Completely agree, so many good LGBTQ+ options that would be better. As another poster said, it's horrible people are hating on Danny for bigoted reasons, the simple fact is they aren't very good on the radio!

  14. Jamie is a far better choice than Danny, and that's saying something! At least there they seemed to admit the error and brought Katie in to make it a pretty decent threesome IMO.

I can't actually understand any logic in Aled's choice about Danny. It's like a very bold experiment but one that was destined to fail before it began. Possibly the worst decision of his tenure (if we forgive him now that Vicki & Dean are moving on). No offence to Danny but he just doesn't seem suited to radio at all, or at least not R1.

The only possible justification I can think of is that none of the 'temp' DJs were high profile enough to cover for such a long time, and if James Cusack is going to get a permanent slot soon then giving it to him would have been awkward. I hate to say it but it's as if he's ticked a box for 'representation' here.

  15. No difference to me. I listened to a bit just to hear how he sounded and clearly he's found his feet there very fast. But R2's music mix is way too dated for me, and despite the slightly modernised jingles overall the station sound is clearly worlds away from R1's dynamic vibrant sound.

I preferred her on Radio 1 as to her as a television presenter. As with radio you aren’t judged on personal image, how you present yourself but more rather the quality of broadcaster. I find not a comment on Jama herself but when people comment on her presenting TV its less about her personality and presenting talent but rather her image.

I get you don't like the criticism of her TV image, but did you actually like her on Radio 1? I mean someone had to, I've just never seen anyone admit it yet ?
