  1. The radio industry is a smaller place than people might think. Hardly mind-blowing that Will Manning would be at Scott's party and I'd imagine they'd be more similar in personality than Scott and Dev would tbh. Sara Cox's Twitter has some hilarious pics of the night by the way!
  2. If I was to have a guess, I'd say in 3 years we'll have Greg on breakfast, then Clara, Grimmy on afternoons (or Matt Edmondson if Nick doesn't stick around) and Alice Levine on Drive.
  3. Ben Cooper's done what he sees as necessary to keep up with modern trends and to future-proof Radio 1 but I do miss the feel of the station during the Parfitt era. The shows seemed to have more freedom, longer links and there was less of an obsession with celebrities. Don't get me wrong, it's still one of the best stations in the world and I love it but there are some things I miss that got me hooked in the first place. I'd be amazed if Grimshaw was still on breakfast this time next year. Greg has now taken his Children in Need job and seems to be doing more outside R1, he really does deserve his shot at breakfast and now would seem like the perfect time to swap. Could also be handy with Newsbeat as if Tina leaves due to her ever-increasing profile outside R1, Chris Smith would go to breakfast with Greg and then Ben Mundy, Steve Holden or whoever would replace him on afternoons.
  4. Really weird how in the Matt Edmondson one, you could hear background noise in the studio while there was dead air between the two emergency tape tracks but Matt didn't say anything on the mic. Then in the Phil Taggart one, Newsbeat came on at 10, then something went wrong midway through, we had about 20 seconds of Clean Bandit before they got back to Kat Collins towards the end of her bulletin. Don't think Phil addressed it either. The nerds in us secretly love when something goes wrong though!
  5. He's going to The Radio 1 Breakfast Show. Shame to see him leave Scott's show- seemed like a great producer and there has been some brilliant content, features and games while he's been there. I think it says a lot that Scott made a point of mentioning on-air the departures of Will and Chris Sawyer- he clearly appreciated them and their contributions to the team.
  6. Haha it just makes you realise how ridiculous some of the phrases are if you don't listen regularly! It adds a real sense of familiarity to the show and for listeners who get them, it takes the show to a whole new level of enjoyment. Love them. Anyone who wants to bother making a list?
  7. I also hope Scott gets it- he thoroughly deserves it. I do think Greg's show is sounding great, though. Chris Smith is still involved a lot after 6pm but not quite as much as before- Greg doesn't talk to him much after bulletins and he isn't used much in the main 5:10pm features. The nominations do seem very BBC-heavy with very little recognition for some of the best commercial shows and presenters. I'll disagree with you on Clara- I think she's really settled into that show now and is sounding great at the moment, probably helped by the fact that I think she's a brilliant interviewer and handles the Live Lounge really well. Her personality is coming out more now and she seems more comfortable on-air. I think Alice Levine was robbed to not be chosen as Fearne's replacement but I'm really enjoying what I hear of Clara's show.
  8. Surprised with the choice of Mistajam but I'll admit I don't listen to his show. I have liked what I've heard of him in the past, though, so hopefully he has the breadth of musical knowledge and interest in as many genres as Annie clearly does. I imagine Phil Taggart will be pretty disappointed. Huw would've been the obvious candidate to sit in for Annie and he probably thought he'd get the 10pm show for that period. Radio 1 don't seem to have an awful lot of faith in him. Pleased with the choice of Danny Howard- he's grown into a really good presenter and has fantastic knowledge of that genre. I thought B Traits did a great job when she covered the Friday night show last time Annie was on maternity leave and enjoy her whenever she covers so slightly disappointed she didn't get it but Danny will be a really good listen, I'd say.
  9. I do think Chris Smith is the best and Tina is excellent in the mornings. Both will be big losses if they leave (Tina seems to be opening other doors and doing more and more outside Newsbeat so her departure might not be too far away). Chris Smith would definitely go to breakfast with Greg if he got it. In terms of news bulletins alone, I think Kat Collins, Steve Holden and Ben Mundy are probably my favourites. Jonathan Blake, James Waterhouse, Lynsey Brown, Duncan Middleton, Anna Collinson and Steffan Powell all deliver consistently good bulletins too. Don't think Steffan will get it- he's good but in small doses. I don't think most people could listen to him doing the news 5 days a week with such a strong accent. When it comes to choosing a new Tina, it's more than just "who's a good newsreader?" They'll be presenting the flagship Newsbeat programme (which requires creativity and being good at engaging listeners as well as being an excellent presenter), doing live Newsbeat TV debates at election times and being the face of Newsbeat. Anna seems to be getting a push as she covers Chris Smith quite a bit and did the Radio 4 30-minute link-up special. She doesn't stand out to me, though.
  10. I think she's brilliant. I know Dev has his fans here but I turn off the radio when he's covering for Greg- he's fine for weekend breakfast and is a good DJ but not weekday material. Alice is only doing Monday-Wednesday unfortunately, it's Dev from Thursday until next Friday. Alice is just naturally funny and witty, has good features and content and her show sounds distinctive imaging-wise by using instrumental beds of playlist songs during some links. I also think she's really improved as a radio presenter technically- much more slick and seems to be better with timing and links. She's the clear frontrunner for a daytime show IMO. The breakfast show has been phoning it in for a while now. No new features, no sense of occasion and the show has lost its spark. Grimmy doesn't sound as bothered anymore. Maybe it could do with a change of production team but I think the show has reached its natural end. I'd be very happy with Greg on breakfast, then Clara followed by Scott with Alice Levine on Drive. I reckon Grimmy might want to go to weekends when the breakfast show finishes anyway.
  11. If doing a Live Lounge from Justin Bieber's house and another one from LA with Usher is "not bothering", I think the standards are a bit too high here! They've definitely reigned it in a bit from the initial Even More Music Month- they went to a huge effort with that and I loved the imaging so it's a shame that all it is now is an expanded Live Lounge although the line-up this year is fantastic and should make for some great radio (and video). One of the format changes from EMMM still stands- at the top of the hour, Scott now plays two songs, a short link ramping into a 3rd song and then a 4th song before the first main link at 1:15. Before, it was 2 songs, then 1 song, then the first main link. It does seem a bit odd that Annie is doing a double shift Wednesday to Friday when they could've gotten Alice or Adele to cover. Very strange decision. I am delighted, though, to hear Annie doing daytime cover again. I thought she'd never cover the 10am show again after moving to the 7pm weekday show. This might be a one-off but I'm looking forward to it- she has one of the best personalities on Radio 1 and is one of the strongest presenters. It's a credit to her that even though she's a specialist presenter, she is a fantastic listen on a show that isn't so music-focussed.
  12. Yeah I'm sort of guessing but it just seems logical that with the start of September and the launch of a big event, it would be the right time to introduce a new set of imaging or voiceovers if that's what they have planned. It's difficult to tell with 6 voices being heard on the station at the moment (7 if you include the Summer Mix VO). I'd also happily see the current voices stay for another year or so- the station sounds great and because it's so different to have 4, I'd like to see it go on a bit longer. Also, a power intro sounds good no matter who the VO is- some of them feature Mike Wooller, the new female VO and one of the current VOs and the current VOs sounds just as good. As long as they don't bring back the female VO from 2012, I'm happy. Loved Mike but her voice drove me mad. Even when I listen to idents or sweepers from then, her voice is like nails down a blackboard to my ears. Probably my least favourite R1 voiceover in memory.
  13. But when was the last time they stuck two solo presenters together? It does send a bit of a message of "we don't think you're good enough on your own". I really like Matt and Alice on their own anyway and Alice was separated from Phil to push her as a solo presenter. Unless they bring in new talent, Alice and Matt are the only two presenters who seem like daytime material. Having said that, neither of them are technically good enough yet IMO- Matt has little to no slickness. It drives me mad when he does a good link, then hits play on a song, stops talking only to awkwardly come back in over the intro of the song to say "you're with Matt on BBC Radio 1, still to come.....". It just sounds awful and something you'd never hear Scott or Greg do- they instinctively know what sounds good and when to stop talking. That's Matt's biggest flaw I think.
  14. I'd like to see Tap End back for a month or two- do it on Wednesdays at 1:45 or something. I don't think a feature like Tap End can get boring because it relies on new stories to exist. It's not like we're hearing the same thing or the same story over and over. If they did it once a week for a while, I'd like it. All depends on whether Chris has any new material! Anyway, he kind of did a Tap End spin-off when he sat in for Ali Plumb and did the movie reviews with Greg that time- it was uncanny how similar in style it was.
  15. Can't be sure but Live Lounge Month would seem the logical time to do it. Big event fot R1, schools and colleges going back etc and IIRC, September 2014 is when the current VOs came in.
  16. Great post, forde52. Strange that they've brought back a previous voiceover but I'm pleased Mike Wooller will be used again- I think he's one of the best voiceovers Radio 1 have had. Bit strange that he's now a Capital presenter on Friday night and a Radio 1 VO at the same time? Looks like the new voiceovers will take over properly when Live Lounge Month starts in a few weeks. I've liked the current foursome- Merv (London-sounding guy) and Louisa (not the Scottish one) in particular have sounded great and I've liked Kyle (Geordie guy) on Dance Anthems and some of the Breakfast Show stuff and idents. Haven't liked the Scottish female at all. It was an experiment to have 4 voices but I think it's worked well- the station has sounded great recently imaging-wise and the diversity in voices has kept things fresh.
  17. Forget that! She's confirmed on Twitter that she's not leaving Radio 1.
  18. Tina Daheley has just been announced as the new presenter of Crimewatch on BBC One. Congrats to her- that's a really great gig. The press release says it'll be on every week across September. She does mention Radio 1 and says she "wants to engage young audiences" but I just wonder that between that, covering BBC Breakfast at weekends and doing 8pm news headlines on BBC One whether she'll still have time do do a full Newsbeat shift in the mornings. I suppose they could just get someone to cover her on the days she's doing Crimewatch but could she feel like it's time to move on?
  19. Completely agree with all of that. If I was to predict, I'd say we're nearing the time for Greg to have his time on breakfast. We know he's Ben Cooper's golden boy and is, in my opinion, the second best presenter on the station after Scott. He is 31 now I think so giving him breakfast would allow him to have 5 or 6 years there before nearing the black hole of 40. I've never been much of a fan of Nick and don't regularly listen to the show apart from the Nixtape (which gets moved around and dropped so much it's hard to keep up). I still think R1 made a mistake not moving Greg to breakfast when he had Pippa and Travis as his producers- the show sounded was the best it has ever been IMO and they had great on-air chemistry. A Greg/Chris Smith double-act on breakfast would be brilliant. Time for a change. As much as I'd love Scott & Chris to get breakfast, it won't happen and actually, I get to listen to loads of the show live in the afternoon and they have really made that slot into something brilliant- it's just perfect afternoon radio and they suit it so well. Agree the breakfast show has a spark when they're on- naturally funny banter, it flows so well, great mix of content etc. If there were to be any changes, I think it could only be promotions for Alice Levine or Jordan North. Alice is one of the most naturally witty and hilarious presenters on the station- she's a real star and after the ridiculous decision to give Clara the 10am show over her. I get the feeling R1 have bigger things in mind such as replacing Scott when he goes or if Greg does go to breakfast, perhaps Alice taking over Drivetime. Jordan North seems to have become No.1 sub on early breakfast and for Matt at weekends. Not sure if he would have left Rock FM for the odd bit of R1 cover and he mentioned a "once in a lifetime opportunity that I'd never forgive myself for if I turned it down" so maybe Jordan to take over weekend afternoons? So Greg to breakfast, Alice to Drive and Jordan to weekend afternoons. Pretty major changes if they happened but that's my speculation!
  20. Haha thanks for making this- gave me a good laugh at how utterly awful she is technically. How the hell did she not know Jericho Keys was covering Huw that night and intro'd him for the news? It's not difficult- 13 seconds to 10, hit the jingle and if she's not confident of hitting the vocal, do a short intro. Say goodbye and wrap up the show, then press the jingle and say "it's ten o'clock. Here's the latest from Newsbeat with X" and then shut up until the ramp hits the vocal. It sounds so sloppy and amateurish to crash the vocal/ say the wrong name of the newsreader/ not press it on time so the reader comes in before the jingle gets to the vocal (in the case of the Nick Rotherham one). Huw is great at introducing the news and nails the timing- they should just let him do it on Wednesdays.
  21. Not as good as the last package- none that really grab me on the first listen. Some of the "Where It Begins" jingles on air now are really strong- particularly the three Scott and Greg seem to use quite a lot. Yep, Scott and Dev probably the best bet to hear them first.
  22. It would make sense. A new Moyles breakfast show on a re-launched station is a very exciting prospect to work on. There's nothing left for her to achieve on R1 as a producer anyway. She's been a producer on an iconic breakfast show, produced the drivetime show and now has a stint on the dance shows. Going out after the 25th anniversary of Radio 1 in Ibiza would be a pretty huge project to finish with. She's been at Radio 1 for quite a while now and the chance to wrap things up with the Ibiza shows and then team up with Moyles seems like a great way to go out. Best of luck to her if it's true- she's a very talented woman.
  23. What a great message Radio 1 are sending to all budding radio presenters out there- when there's a slot that needs covering, we won't give a young new talent a go, we'll give it to YouTubers who want a bit of extra work on the side. It's baffling - Capital are better at bringing through new radio talent than R1 now. Jack & Dean's cover won't be visualised so what's the point? People listening at that time don't want YouTubers who've never done a proper radio show before. It's clear Radio 1 are pushing Jack and Dean but just keep them on the Internet Takeover and doing videos for YouTube and the iPlayer channel. Hopefully this is just a once-off as Matt Edmondson's show is quite off the wall and fun compared to other weekend shows. Why not give some new talent a go on the Sunday show, though? They lost Pete Allison to Capital and they'll probably lose Jordan North to another station if they keep dodging the opportunities to sign new talent. Apart from Clara Amfo, who was the last true radio presenter who worked their way up and was given a shot by R1 at a young age?
  24. I understand the thinking behind this (keeping it fresh and all that) but when two producers click with a presenter and vice versa, what does moving them around achieve? I'm really disappointed to see Pippa and Travis leave Greg's show as his show has improved massively this year IMO and they had really good personalities which meant their contributions were always enjoyable when they were involved on-air. The two of them get Greg's personality, they seemed to get on really well and when coming up with ideas for the show, they know if they'd work on-air or not. It's also strange as Greg seems to be widely viewed as the next Breakfast presenter so in the same way Matt Fincham went to work on Grimmy's 10pm show before he moved, Pippa is a former breakfast producer and would have been the perfect person to prepare Greg for that show. Also disappointing that Chris Sawyer is gone from Scott's show. I agree with an earlier poster that I think he was a big part of the comedy on the show and some of the ideas. Thought it was telling that Scott made a point of mentioning his departure and saying that he'd be missed even though he didn't have a speaking role on the show - can't remember Scott doing that with past non-speaking producers (apart from The One That Doesn't Speak obvs). Radio 1 clearly see him as a major asset, hence his promotion to Breakfast (although I don't know why he hasn't replaced Fiona as AP). I think Scott's show is going through another golden period at the moment so hopefully the new AP will continue where Chris Sawyer left off.
